    Go ahead -- call me a n00b!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys.

This thread is very important to me. I have done a lot of research and you guys have influenced me on the wheels, exhaust, tires and suspension that i am currently in the process of buying or already have.

I now need a chip. But i do not fully understand the capabilites of having such an upgrade. Now i know, some of you might be inclined to tell me to go do research and make fun of me hardcore, but trust me i have. My downfall is that 100% of the the threads i have read are filled with technically proficient people that understand all there is to understand.

    the Question:

How exactly does a chip work? do i plug it into my car, press a setting and then unplug (is this known as flashing)? or can i have a rig ( say hidden in my ash tray) i could constantly change the setting SO i would not have to drive in fast mode all the time? Also, i understand that you can buy different settings like vallet, stock, race, kill etc. Lastly, I know i will have to upgrade my DV but i unfortunately have the 2005.5 with the old fuel pump, cam and cam followers which most likely need to be upgraded.... IF i chip my car and those parts fail, can i reflash the car to stock and the dealer wont know, thus replacing my parts under warranty -- WHICH IS UP IN APRIL!

I apologize for the long winded question.

    Here is my car:

The weather is crappy but i currently have the following on the car:
    -AWE Quad tip exhaust
    -Carbonio
    -interior led lights
-Inpro mirrors (sitting in my room)
-rs4 pedals (also sitting in my room)
    -VMR 710 (in transit)
-Stasis SS (waiting for somebody to buy new ones so i can buy theirs)
    -FK452's (in transit)
-Cupra R (ordered at dealer last wed)

ENJOY! AND I THANK YOU! if you live in pittsburgh, i will buy you a beer!!!!

Re: Go ahead -- call me a n00b!

A chip is a reflash of your ecu (engine control unit). If you want to have the ability to switch your car back to stock you buy a "stock" program from the software dealer. Depending on the company, you will either switch through programs through the cruise control stalk (APR) or through a selector which plugs in through your OBDII port (revo and giac). To give you an idea, the selector looks like this: http://www.revotechnik.com/products/select.aspx

The software dealers have plenty of info about ecu upgrades right on their website as well, check their FAQ's:

    http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/e...rade_b7a4.html
    http://www.revotechnik.com/products/....aspx?pvID=592
    http://www.giacusa.com/programs.php?mpid=123

If you need to take your car to the dealership for whatever reason you don't need to "reflash" the car back to stock, all you need to do is flip the switch on the selector to stock position and then unplug it (or choose stock with your cruise control stalk if you get an apr chip), for the most part, the dealer will not be able to tell you're chipped.

    GL, How this helps.

Re: Go ahead -- call me a n00b!

Steelers are gonna win, yay. There are many options for a chip and I suggest APR, because APR manufactures many other upgrades and they write their codes for those upgrades. Most other chip makers do not manufacture all of the other upgrades.

The following will be based solely on APR. When you get "flashed" you will go to an APR distributor, which can be located on their website, and they will connect your car to a laptop which will reprogram your Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU receives signals from many engine sensors and then based on those signals it sends signals to other parts of the engine to tell it how to mix the fuel and air and other stuff. The stock setup keeps everything very toned down, but the reprogrammed chip can increase the amount of fuel and air that goes into the engine which will make a more powerful bang, which increases power. It does more, but that keeps it somewhat simple. When you get APR you can decide how many programs you want, but I won't waste time explaining, because they are pretty much self-explanatory. You can switch between them whenever you want and if you get the stock programming installed then the dealer would never know as long as you change the program before you go in.

Re: Go ahead -- call me a n00b!

These Steelers ARE going to win. except that last TD was SHIT. We are getting sloppy
I think the only thing i havnt understood, from APR and GIAC and even REVO websites is how it is connected to the car. Usually people in the forums already know this and i just couldnt find a n00b with the same question so i appreciate your help.

So with APR, say if i buy race, stock and valley (or whatever) , i could simply just switch back and forth on my cruise control lever??

And what about the fuel pump situation? I did read a thread that said the APR 91 wont make my old fuel pump cut out, but damnit i want a 93 program

Re: Go ahead -- call me a n00b!

Couple things others mentioned but I figured I'd chime in.

    1. To get chipped with APR software you visit one of our dealers, let them plug a computer into your car, and have the software downloaded to your vehicle. You can locate our closest APR dealer here: http://www.goapr.com/dealer/

    2. We offer different programs such as you have described. To change them you enter a combination of clicks on your cruise control stalk. Once in chipped or 'fast' mode, you will stay in this mode unless you change it or if you unplug your battery. We have an instruction manual that details everything you can do. You can read about it here: http://www.goapr.com/Audi/support/dp...structions.pdf

2a. Here is how we change programs on the new TSI engine's. This is very similar to the way it will be done on your car:

    3. Your OEM fuel pump is fine for a stage 1 flash. 91/93/100, it doesnt matter! Unless you have an oem hardware issue, you'll not experience a fuel cut from our stage 1 software. You have no need to upgrade it unless you are looking for more and more power from a fuel pump specific recalibration once you are past stage 2, or if you are upgrading your turbocharger to a stage 3 or k04 kit. If you ever need to go to the dealer, if you have our stock program and security lockout, you can lock the car in stock mode and the dealer will have no way to tell you are flashed. Our stock calibration is the calibration that came with your car so at the dealership level it's completely undetectable. If you still are not convinced, you can always go back to an APR dealer and have your stock software flashed back to the car and everything APR removed.

Lastly, you can try our software for free for 6 hours of driving time. Head to any APR dealer and they'll give you our trial software! I'm sure you'll love it!

Re: Go ahead -- call me a n00b!

All of the "chipping" is done from a dealers laptop which is plugged into your OBD-II port.

Yes, with APR you control your cars programs through the cruise control stalk.

so when you say -- i will stay in that mode unless i "change it" or unplug my battery, you mean all i have to do is just flick my cruise control knob? Im going to hit up Next Level tuning in Greensburgh. thats only an hour away from me.

Also, what kind of numbers do you think i would be looking at with the stage one?

    Thanks Arin!!

AudiWXguy- I will. You prob wont hear about it for a while because we are getting so much snow up here and the temperature is in the negative digits at night. I was thinking of putting them on around April. The thread i started about the 452s though go so much positive feedback... i just looked at it and you posted a few times.

I'm really excited about them because they have strong sidewalls, good tread, good grip and they are a relatively cheap price.
