gauge cluster swap

Need some help with a gauge cluster swap from a 2001.5 to a 2000 using vag com. Does the licensed program need to be bought or can it be done with the free software. The 2001.5 has more mileage so the mileage need to be changed. Where can I get the software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't change mileage via VC. I think you can make a 1 time adjustment upwards on new clusters but that's it.

from what i know i dont think you could put in a 2001 cluster in a 2000 ive tried and i have a vag to try to recode it..

yes but you will have to have the mileage etc adapted at the dealer with the cluster. they use the scantool to adjust the mileage

so being that they have already been swapped i can just plug the new cluster into my car and drive up to the stealership and they can swap everything?

I'm pretty sure the only time the cluster can be re-programed for milage is before the cluster reads 5 miles, after that it burns in.

well it hasent even been plugged in yet. i guess ill have to get it towed to the dealer then reprogramed?

no defiantly not before 5 miles. There are thousands of people out there that can turn back the mileage/ or adjust the mileage or whatever you need. Just gotta find them.

I've read some where that there's an eprom behind the cluster that stores the mileage. You just remove it from your old cluster and plug in to your new. Anyone have any pictures of the rear of the cluster to confirm this?

i didnt see anything begind the cluster other than a couple stickers with numbers on them so i peeled the stickers off my old cluster before i swapped them.

take apart the back of the cluster so that you can actually see the needles. Then see and confirm it.

theres a write up on audiworld somewhere. I remember seeing it a while back. Also i believe marc knows somewhat how to xfer the mileage over but i may be wrong. try pming him.

sounds like you're kinda screwed then...

i'm doubting a dealer will do that for you. maybe if you pay a tech on the side, but even then i'm sure there are some pretty big reprecussions for getting caught doing that.

why are you so worried about the mileage? just use the cluster. who cares? the recode procedure using vag com is easy.

i mean id like the gauge i swapped in there to read the correct mileage if possible. the guy i swapped it with's car had a little over 20,000 miles on it

If you really want it to read correctly, you can swap the mileage eprom from the back of your old cluster to the new one. It's a solder job. I have no idea which one it is and take no responsibilty for the end result.

Does anyone have a part number or know a price on the LCD if it even can be replaced? If that part can just be replaced I'd settle for that. Right now mine is really looking like crap.

A new uncoded cluster can have the mileage rest to any greater value once until the odo reads 100 kilometers.

There is no approved dealer tools that can adjust an already mileage coded cluster, but there are several tools that you can use to redo the mileage with varying success. There is a VAGTACHO, VAG commander etc, and most are copies that have come out of China.

The 2001 cluster is a different part number than a 2000, and I don't think you can successfully swap them.

I don't think there is a replacement LCD available, yet many cluster repair shops claim to be able to fix that flaw.

As i stated above. i have a 2000 s and i brought a 2001 cluster hooked it up and not everything works... Also the oil indicators stays on and the RMP dont work. I have a vag com and ive tried reprogram it and recode it and no luck but i might be wrong..
