    S4 Coil-overs

Hey guys, I'm looking to get some coil-overs for my S4 avant...

I've driven in a buddy of mines car with Ohlins Sls and i loved them, however they were a bit too stiff for me. I'm looking for a kit with adjustable ride height that will improve handling but not leave me missing that amazingly smooth ride the car comes with (obviously i will lose some of that comfort).

i know i could go with the fully adjustable Stasis kit but don't feel like i need all that performance (or to spend all that $$). i won't be tracking the car or anything like that.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

    Re: S4 Coil-overs

SLs can be adjusted for the best performance AND the best comfort both at the same time in comparison to other coils.

other options are Vogtlands, StartupRacing GTs, H&R, PSS9, that new VMaxx kit tahts like $600, could be forgetting something...

    Re: S4 Coil-overs

I think Cargo8 covered it for ya.

Frankly, I didn't consider my stock suspension "amazingly smooth" ! I definitely felt a serious improvement in smooth ride with the Startup Racing GT's though. If you do a search you'll find a couple of my write ups on them

    Re: S4 Coil-overs

Hey. Right now I have the Bilstien PSS9's on my car. I lowered it 1.25" and with 19" wheels. The ride is still pretty nice, and the handling is unreal. This is on a B6 S4, and my friend has H&R's on his B5 s4... I think mine is a little stiffer, and lowered a bit more, but also, its a different car now, so I dont know. PSS9 you could find for around 1,200 new. Good luck!

    Re: S4 Coil-overs

You're not gonna find PSS9's for $1,200. You can get them for $1,500 if you look.

As far as adjusting the SL's, they are not damping adjustable, only ride height.

KW V3's are pretty close to stock ride with less bounce and way less body roll.

I would like to know how the v-maxx coilovers perform on daily driving/street too.
does anyone have a first hand experience who would like to share?

I wouldn't trust the v-maxx coilovers. they are the same for the s4 as the a4. there's a big weight difference between the front ends so i would be nervous with coilovers designed to work for the a4...unless they were designed for the s4 but also could be used on the a4 and not the other way around.

if they are the same that is flat out stupid...seriously the weight difference is huge...why would they do that?

Bilstein PSS9s have an application for both A4/S4, that doesnt seem to bother people.

No they are different. The part number for S4 (B6/B7) PSS9 is F4-GM5-A595-H2, while the part number for the A4 (B7) is F4-GM5-8859-H2. They are different. I know some A4 people run S4 PSS9 for a more aggressive ride, but definitely not the other way around.

    Re: S4 Coil-overs

Right sorry. What I meant was its the same system for both, except the A4 has softer springs with the kit. If this kit was simply designed for the stiffer spring application, or the softer, or whatever they declare, then it shouldn't be knocked just for not providing two different spring rates. Many A4 owners buy the S4 PSS9 because it has the stiffer spring rate and is otherwise the same coilover.

On another note I want someone to buy it and write a review...

    Re: S4 Coil-overs

avant cannot use sedan setup. The sedan usually uses stiffer rear springs than front, but because of the extra load in back, avants use symmetrical springs (same rates as fronts) in their applications.

Not so for the Vogts. Both the Startup Racing GT's and Regular Vogts use the same setup for both sedan and Avants. Here are the numbers:

    SR GT's - F575/ R700
    Reg Vogts F550/ R 525

AND the same setup used for both A4's as well as S4's !

Well there you go! People are scared (by people I mean me) of VMaxx just because of the price. Also, the reg vogts use softer rear springs than fronts???

I have no problem generally stating that " ya pay for what ya get" but have been pleasantly surprised on occasion where this isn't the case ...

Yup, the regular Vogts do have softer springs in the rear although the fronts are progressive so perhaps it can be argued that initially the fronts are a bit softer. I don't know the working range of the reg version but the SR GT fronts have a working range of 550 to 625. I understand this helps provide the very comfy ride while under normal driving conditions ...

i love my V3s. that and the h sport rs4 sways make it a very different car. just about zero body roll, great turn in and it rotates nicely(i.e. i havent seen it understeer yet). they make the car way more enjoyable to drive, im an active onramp hunter now. its a shame i live in the middle of tennesse as everything is straight here. need to go to the dragon...

and oh yeah, it looks nice too.

Sorry to the OP not trying to thread jack -but- after reading numerous AZ posts about this question... I have one of my own:

If one does not want/need the ability to adjust ride height & will only track...a 1/4 mile at a time- does H&R springs + Koni Yellow struts make more sense than any brand of Coilover?

That is not what I was told when I bought the SL's for my B6S4. I was told the SL's only come with 750/1100, but the Motorsports can be had with 3 different rate sets. I was assured the 750/1100 was a perfect balance of ride quality and handling and that the super Ohlins damper would make the ride comfortable even with the very stiff springs.
