    Blinking Check engine light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

We just purchased a 2003 Allroad approx 3 months ago with 55,000 miles. The Check engine light came on yesterday. We only moved the car in the driveway, and now the Check engine light is blinking.

    1) Does anyone know a great Independent repair shop in Greensboro, N.C.?

    2) It sounds fine, would I be ok to drive it to a local shop or dealer?

    3) We've found a recomended shop about 55 minutes away. Is there a place/service where we can get the code checked for a fee? Then we could determine if we could make the 55 minute drive, unless we find a place closer before then. Does one of the autoparts chains have the diagnostic tools?

    (Already checked gas cap)

    Re: Blinking Check engine light

I wouldn't drive 55 min. away with a blinking CEL, I would purchase a VagCom from www.Ross-tech.com (or the cheaper ebay version) and pull the code(s), then get back to us.

I know we have members on here from Charlotte (Gigi) and over by Outer Banks (Chrisbostonusmc) but that's pretty far from you. Send them PMs though, they may know places/folks close to you. How about trying the SE regional forum, see if anybody closer to you has VagCom to read the codes about your CEL? I think "AutoZone" has ability to read codes, too.

    Re: Blinking Check engine light

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm new to the electronics. My daily driver is a 48 Wilys cj2a "original quattro". Wife and I share the allroad as the family car.

I started the car and let it idle for a minute in the garage. Check engine light was on, but not blinking. The wife said it was blinking earlier when she moved it 30 feet. Since it wasn't blinking I drove to an advance auto and they pulled these two codes:

PO 118 Engine Coolant Temp circuit, high input.....

PO 130 02 Circuit malfunction, Bank one, sensor one, o2 sensor

How do I correct? What do these codes mean?

    Re: Blinking Check engine light

Don't know about 118. But obviously make sure your colant is full and monitor engine temp gauge!

O2 sensor CEL is easier -- you have 2.7turbo? There are a pair of O2 (oxygen) sensors for each side that measure emissions -- before and after catalytic converters. One seems to be bad, located at your downpipes. Presumably needs to be replaced or maybe wire loose?

But of course the consensus on AZ is that you will want to get rid of stock downpipes, buy bigger ones with racing, free-flow cats (as long as you're at it, get new catback exhaust) that will add power along with the higher HP chip you want to add....

    Re: Blinking Check engine light

Thanks for the input on the o2 censors, I'll get a replacement or two after checking the wiring...

Does anyone know what the PO 118 Engine Coolant Temp Circuit, High Input stems from? It's been unusually cold here lately and the temp zone has never been a more than a shade or two past the center.

I'd like to clear up the PO 118 issue first, then change a censor or two to see if the light goes away.

    Thanks,

    Alan

you can drive car with thrown Os sensor code. PM Daft (moderator of this forum) about 118 - he's very tech-savy

    Re: Blinking Check engine light

The bank 1, sensor 1 is your passenger side, primary o2 sensor that is precat and helps in controlling the proper A/f ratios. The secondary sensors are the ones that deal with emissions. If you want to try to replace the sensor yourself, this is the best I could do to find you a pic to give you an idea where it's located...it's not too bad on the passenger side and I am by no means mechanically gifted:

Also, check out Vast's o2 sensors as they are a good amount cheaper than OEM (depending on where you look).
