A Little problem this morning, need some help

ok, so first off my cel is on. I had it scanned and it says bank 1 lean. So my mechanic told me its because my diverter is sticking under low boost. It still works but under minimal boost it doesnt open properly. For example if I am launching out of first normally, if its revved up with maybe 1 psi of boost it will cause the engine to stall. Kind of like pumping the gas too much coming off the clutch. Which thus doesnt allow the vacuum to open the diverter properly. But this does not affect the way the car drives, runs smooth.

Ok this morning im driving, and I'm on the highway using cruise control on and off. I got to put it back on, and my EPC light comes on and the whole car shuts down, no power. So i pull over and the car just has nothing. In neutral I press the gas and the tach does nothing. So I am thinking it has been put into limp mode. I turn the car off, then back on, and everything was fine, drove another 20 miles, been fine since.
Anyone got any info/experiences with this and have any idea what it can be. My mechanic was also saying possibly a 02 sensor? any relations with the two problems? Need some help

    Thanks,

    Adam

Ok so i find out that i have an ebay bov piece of junk. OK so i will be taking that out.

I know my mechanic is guessing, because he isn't too familiar with audis. This is why i consult here. I wana know if the two problems have anything to do with eachother.

So does a bank 1 to lean have something to do with the broken/sticking bov?

Sounds like a problem with your brake light switch. If your brake light switch is activated long enough with the accelerator depressed it can put the car in limp mode and illuminate the EPC light. Either you were lightly riding the brake or the brake pedal switch needs adjusting. I wouldn't worry about it unless it does it again.

Probably not. Can you find out the exact "lean" code? It would be helpful in determining the problem instead of just guessing.

I will check what the code was. I saw it when i did it, "bank 1 to lean" was all the reader had said.

    - From you first post, ur saying i was riding the break pedal, while under cruise control? The limp mode and EPC came up when I flicked the cruise control level off.

What I was stating is that if the brake switch is activated for more than a few seconds while the accelerator is activated it can cause the symptoms you described. The EPC light comes on and the car goes into limp mode. Riding the brake could cause it as well as a faulty or out of adjustment brake switch. I would just clear any codes and see if it occurs again. It could be a one time electrical glitch.

As to the lean code: There are numerous codes dealing with lean conditions. I assume you are using a generic reader and thus cannot get more specific information. Without that detail it is just a guessing game.

No argument there. However it typically won't cause the limp mode condition which is why I suggested the brake switch.

It's the switch on the brake pedal under the dash that activates when you press the pedal.

Its the clicking sound when in park on an tip gearbox? Similar to that?

Now you think this could be the problem? Being in cruise control and hitting the brake ever so slightly could trigger the computer to go into limp mode. Sometimes while in cruise control i will press in the clutch and downshift, usually just comes out of cruise control. Could that also affect? Sorry about the questions, trying to isolate the problem, dont want to get stranded out on the road. Appreciate your help

I don't think the brake pedal switch makes enough noise to hear it. You indicated that after you restarted your car the issue went away. My guess is that what occurred is just one of those "German Engineering " glitches that sometimes occur and are difficult to explain. If you have access to any diagnostic software (Vagcom, etc) you should check for any pertinent DTC's. If not I would suggest trying to duplicate the problem. If after numerous attempts you fail to duplicate the problem I wouldn't worry about it. If you can duplicate the problem you will have to hook up with the proper diagnostic tools to figure it out.

    Good luck!

Wow. That didn't take long to duplicate did it? I went back and read your original post. I was assuming your car went into limp mode but upon closer examination of your comments I am no longer sure. Are you saying that the engine cut off completely or that it was running but with limited power (limp mode). If it cut off completely your issue could very well be with the fuel delivery system as in a faulty fuel pump. Why that would correspond with the activation of cruise control I don't know. Maybe diagnosticator will chime in.

There is something you can check right now to see if you are getting fuel to the injectors. At the back of the fuel rail (the end closest to the firewall) there is a black cap. Unscrew the cap and you will see a Schrader valve (like a tire stem valve). Have someone turn the ignition key on while you depress the valve and you should see fuel spray out under high pressure (50 to 60 psi). Be sure to use a rag or container or something to catch the fuel. No or very low pressure will indicate a problem with the fuel pump or fuel filter. If you have adequate pressure at least fueling will be eliminated as the issue.

    Good luck!

I do believe it went into some sort of limp mode. It shut down all power, but still ran. Upon turning it off then back on, it was fine again. I put it back in the garage when i got home. Few hours later went to start it, and nothing. Its weird I dont think its getting any spark, sounds like the starter is just spinning.

Took it for a drive, seems perfectly fine. The bov seems to sound stuck. Now would that be a factor? If it were stuck open or closed would that have something to do with not allowing it too start for a few seconds? Then turning it over would open it or close it allowing the engine to come alive?

I wouldn't think so. When you are starting the car there is no boost from the turbo and all of the intake air will be metered through the MAF whether it travels through the turbo or a stuck open DV. However I could be wrong and I would certainly suggest replacing the DV if you suspect it isn't functioning properly.

    Good luck!
