    Cam Chain Tensioner Toast?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've noticed once the oil gets to temp while driving I have a VERY loud knocking noise coming from the engine, but only during idle. It only does this once the car is up to temps, when its first started it sounds like a champ, give it about 10-15 minutes and it starts sounding like hell.

I'm thinking this is my problem, but before I jump into buying the parts I would like to eliminate any other problems it could be. This all started occurring about 1000 miles after I had replaced the TB.

Thanks for any feedback or help guys!

The symtoms you describe were what I was experiencing when my cam chain tensioner was on its way out. Sounds like a diesel at idle after it warms up but normal otherwise. That sucks bro the part is kinda pricy. Good luck.

Mine is doing that too right now! Mine started right after the timing belt was replaced too. I have an added symptom though; when I start the car from a cold start I get a nice loud fast clicking sound for about 3 seconds. Its sweet.

Seems like the '01's have an issue with the chain tensioner. And we have the most expensive one! Maybe one of the more technically knowledgeable members can chime in on why this happens.

i think the 01's have vvt which is why they have more expensive cam chain tensioners. i had mine replaced last week and it was $856 which wasnt that bad and they fixed my coolant flange in the back of the engine too. btw my car is a 98 1.8t so its probably more for the 01
Unitronic stage 2, 3 inch turboback, Stasis SS coils...

Yeah, I checked MJM Autohaus and I think it was ~$400 for the tensioner and gaskets etc. I plan on doing it myself in the spring. There's a couple really detailed writeups on it somewhere out there.

My local Audi guy says her can do the job with a used part off of a spare engine in his shop for about $600 but there's never a guarantee how long that'll last.

Most recently I have also noticed when sitting at a light my car tends to shake a bit and the idle fluctuates like crazy.

I have somewhere to be this weekend about a 2 hour drive one way, im leaning towards not going. Granted I have been driving it like this for about 2 months now.
