It's NOT about how much "profit" they can bring in by having coil packs changes as often as oil... but the R coils indeed put out a much higher and more efficient spark (higher voltage). The R coils are found in A4's that were designated "ULEV" starting from 2001 and up. The E coils are in the LEV vehicles. To meet the "ULEV" standard, the A/F mixture has to be burned and atomized much more efficiently, and the E coils can NOT provide that.
Because the R coils have a higher output, it's life expectancy is also adversely affected. Here's a test: open your spark plug gap to 0.034" with the R coils, it will most likely hold its own and not missfire. Now put in the E coils at that same gap, and your car will be stumbling the minute boost comes online. On the E coils, any gap over 0.030" + boost will not sustain itself.
So to say "R coils suck", they suck because they do not last... but it does not mean that they are more inferior than the E coils (which last up to 100k from what I've seen). E coils will also never blow up and "leave you stranded"...they will gradually and slowly start to die, as missfires begin to become more and more apparent until you literally need a 0.020" gap to keep the car running.
