Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just figured i would try and keep the forum clean since ive been posting alot of threads latley for car latley and stick three subjects on one thread.

    1. Where can i buy a new fuel filter? Its never been replaced in over a year at least. If its dirty, will a new one improve my gas mileage?

    2. My tranny seems to be engaging roughly latley, when use the clutch it seems to grab abruptly. Even when i am in gear at a cruse, when i engage the clutch to the floor it seems to say 'i was happy where i was, i diddent want to leave'......i guess thats how i would describe it. lol. "Stubborn" could be another word to describe the way its acting. My buddy says its just because its FREEZING here and the clutch is just sticking a little bit. Its ushally in 10-20 degree weather outside at night here. Whats goin on in my tranny?

    3. Plugs - God only knows when the last time the plugs were changed. Ive only had the car for a year and have never done them. What should i use for my 1998 2.8L 30V Quattro Manual, in NY we get sub zero colds and blistering hots. I normally drive quite nice, many short trips, ushally 10-15min trips some 30-60min once and a while, with a few pedal to the medal moments here and there. (Idk what info is needed exactly )

    Thanks guys

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

For fuel filter it should go for 30,000 miles thats what i was told you should wait to replace it. I did mine and i instantly saw 60 or 70 miles per fill up i dont know if it was ever changed. You can pick one up at the dealer for $30 not to bad maybe $20 online, make sure you get all 4 crush washers or else you will get a leak.

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

i was wondering, why would a clogged fuel filter offer less mpg, is it because your car is not running as efficiently as it should? It would seem that the clog would cause it to run lean and use less fuel, but like i say i have read people say that many times and i am just trying to figure out why that is?

Just go to autozone.. They can look all that shit up.. Just don't buy a nonsense brand.. Get Bosch stuff and you'll be fine. It'll probably cost like $30.. Depending on the plugs.

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

I would not suggest autozone for a fuel filter simply because i picked on up there and it wasnt for my car, returned it and same thing. Try german autoparts or ecs, just make sure you get those 4 crush washers.

A clogged fuel filter can actually allow dirt through the filter and into your fuel system. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing due to the impurities passing through, the car will run rich to make up for it.

I dont think they carry it . The one that is right isnt bosch and its $30. You have to have it ordered. so i would just pick up the bosch at the dealer if i was you.

Went to PepBoys, they looked in the computer and found a 'Purilater' or however its spelled, i used oil filters by them, no problems.

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

i would just go to the dealer and get the oem fuel filter, its only like $30 and they will give you the 4 crush washers that you need. Very crucial. Fuel filter should increase smoothness in power band and prob fuel economy. I would wait though on replacing it. 30k is the earliest you want to change those out. I think any less and it would be kinda pointless, not to mention its kinda a PITA. For plugs, I would go with some normal Bosch plugs or some ngk's. I was given ngk BKUR6ET-10 (part #2397 i believe) plugs by a quality audi/vw shop. Havent gone in yet becuase im going to wait a little longer. But they seem like they will be good plugs, also for a 97 12v 2.8.

clutches def act different dependent on weather, i would worry about it to much as long as you arent grinding or anything like that. Try pushing the clutch in quicker?

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

Kronic, actually, i think it happens mostly when i do push the clutch in a little faster. It only does this every once and a while but it does bother me a little bit. Thanks for the Plug numbers. Why would you say wait on the fuel filter? I dont know when the last time it was changed. Ive only put 6,000miles on the car and shes at 112,000. Maby ill do the plugs and filter at the same time.

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

The clutch return issue is due to the cold brake fluid. It has been -10 to -25 with -52 or more wind chills here all week and my clutch pedal almost wouldn't return at all, the fluid is just too thick for the slave cylinder and has nothing to do with the tranny.

Re: Tranny, Plugs and Fuel Filter Help

oh ok well then it probably hasnt been replaced. I misread thinking that u said it was replaced recently.

clutch issue prob has to do with the cold weather, im sure. And a slightly worn clutch.

You're fine. If when you start it up and it acts like you described, that's just normal for the cold like the others have said. If it were to continually do it even after you've driven the car for about 30 minutes, then I would be worried.
