Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was driving my car pretty hard yesterday and noticed when i slowed down i could hear what sounded like compressed air being released on the driver side. The noise goes away when i accelerate and only happens if i have had a long trip or been driving hard. I know it wasn't heater cuz it was turned off along with radio, so what is this noise??? Please help!!

Is the car boosting right? What is your vacuum at idle?

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

I bet its your break booster hose. Do your brakes feel more stiff or harder to press? This is the hard plastic hose that goes into the firewall and the other end goes to intake under the Y pipe. Here is a pic of the hose:
NOTE: it may look a little different depending if you have the 00 or 01

Make sure its plugged in all the way into the firewall.

Also if it is a boost leak I wouldnt get on it too much until you fix the problem. That will be hard on your turbo's

If it is your brake booster hose, you can buy one at genuineaudiparts.com They have it the cheapest for around 70 bucks. Also I can give you the part number.

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

I was going to suggest it may be the brake booster hose as well. I had that hose come off immediately after a WOT session. Needless to say, what felt like no brakes, a stalling car, and a loud hissing sound scared the crap out of me!!!

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

I looked at my brake booster hose and it seems to be fine and my brakes seem to work fine aswell. The rushing air sound comes now even if im at a low RPM at the stop sign and will stop when i start accelerating. But still only does it when the car is warmed up to a higher oil temp.im still cant figure out what it is and am driving my car as little as possible until i install my boost guage incase its the turbos, any help is appreciated!!

You have to check all the braided vacuum lines, even a small leak can be loud.

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

After second consideration i think that it might be my break boost hose because of the loud hissing noise of rushing air seems to be very prominant after i brake. When i release the break it hisses very loud than quites down afterward....My check engine light when one yesterday and im not sure if my brake boost hose would cause that or not??

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

If you are ever close to Etobicoke or Toronto, I could take a look at it for you.

You need to do a pressure test though. All this online diagnosing is useless without a pressure test to truely find out where the air is escaping from.

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

Another question is is my car alright to drive until i get it fixed, if infact it is the brake boost hose like i suspect? Im not driving it right now because im oviously worried it could do some serious damage, but i need a vehicle!! I have ordered a vag com today but it will take weeks to come from japan and i cant wait that long. How easy is it to replace brake boost hose, cuz im not a wrench.

Oh and yeah it was idling pretty rough, along with the loud air rush sound.

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

My car doesn't sound like it has cams, the only difference i have really noticed is the sound it makes after i brake along with lack of power. I brought my car to my local mechanics today so he could taake a look at it for me and mybe give me some more insight. I hope its just the Brake boost cable and nothing serious or im fucked.

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

I just talked to my local mechanic and he said it would cost around a woping $800. He said it is about 3-4 hours of labour and about 4-5 hours for the part...Is my mechanic making me grab my ancles or is this a normal price

    BTW (CAN) dollars

I just looked up the price for a brake booster and the price is an unfortunate $419, so i dont know where $70.13 came from.

I guess the $70 is for just the hose and apparently the wrench said my whole brake boost unit is garbage so the $419 is normal. I guess im just fucked and have to cough up the dough!!

How did he prove it was the actual brake booster unit and NOT just the hose which is the common problem with these cars?

    I think it's 2nd opinion time.

Yes the 70 dollar part is just for the brake booster hose. I would also like to know why he thinks its the brake booster itself and not just the hose.

Re: HELP!! Air flow sound when im idled

I still have my brakes and the air whistling noise was only happenin when i released the brake and not all the time, which he said it would if the hose came off. I told him about the boost hose thats frequently comes off on our car and he said he checked that and it wasn't it and that if the hose had come off i would have had no brakes, which i did....still not sure what to do and waiting for more feedback.
