DIY: HID Fog Lights (B5 S4)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
People always ask me how I kept the bulb in place with my HID fogs, unlike the A4 (B5/B6) where they have a wire bulb holder, the S4 has the bulb mount into the "socket."

This is how I mounted the bulb, this is my way. I'm sure there are others, but I found this to be the most effective.

I found those metal clips at my work, we use them for our lasers so I would have no idea where to actually get them.

For the igniters, I took the stock bulb harness, removed the circle trim (the "lock") which is colored in purple in the picture and plugged the wires into the harness. You could also splice into the wires directly, but I wanted the option to remove the HID kit If I wanted to.

    Enjoy:

Re: DIY: HID Fog Lights (B5 S4)

I drilled 4 holes, and then secured the bulb by using 2 straight cotter pins for each housing, in one side and out the other tight to the rubber backing. Works like a charm.

Cotter pins are like 2 cents each too.

    I should've taken pics. Doh!

I know this is an old thread but Rated S... where did you mount your ballasts, what temp did you install, & did you do any modification to make sure the bulbs pointed down at all?

My ballasts are just pinned down by my sidemount shrouds inbetween the bumper. I installed 6000k 35w DDM slim ballast, and I have 6000k D2S bulbs in my headlights. The only "modification" I did was use the pins to hold the bulb flush to the housing. Nothing more.

Re: DIY: HID Fog Lights (B5 S4)

Thanks S. My ballasts are bit bulkier, and I am afraid if i mount them right to the shroud it will block airflow to my intercoolers.

Where exactly did you mount your ballast...under the shroud and above the bumper? Have a photo?
    Thanks for your help man.

For those of you who have had HID fog lights for a while. Are you experiencing any melting or burning of the fog light assembly?

Nope, and I turn them on every time my headlights are on because my headlights are extremely dim. I get more light output from my 35w 3000k fog lights than my 55w 4500k low beams (due to foggy projectors).

Some pics of my 3000k 35W DDM kit. A decent kit for the money. Also 4500K 55W DDM lowbeams.

not at all... lenses are cool to the touch after a long drive and a period of sitting and idling.

What are you guys using for replacement low beam bulbs? I have the DDM kit/Depo assembly. An part number would be most helpful.

FYI, H11 bulbs work better than H7 because they come witha tappered o-ring that seals out water without any mickey mouse silicone or glue

I just fitted 55W slim ballasts with 3000K H11 HID bulbs into the foglights.
The cotter pin trick is a good way: the H11 bulb has a rubber seal that helps to keep it in place. I made the cotter pins from a shirt hanger (metal wire).
The only drawback maybe with H11 bulb compared to H7 bulb in HID flavor is the light focus point, H11 is a bit higher compared to H7 body. Overall, I tried it last night and I have very good light output.
Slim ballast can be hidden in the reinforcement structure (it fits inside with a zip tie) of the bumber, just above the grille you removed to reach the foglight. The wiring runs along on top and is hidden when reaching the back of the foglight.
I had some concerns not to fit the ballast between the shroud and the bumber, but higher, not to be prone to water dripping, even if the ballasts are sealed (more or less).

**(I know this is a super old thread, but didn't want to start a new one just for this question)**

update on mine...the fog light button on the dash sometimes does not light up, or turn on the fog lights. Sometimes in the middle of driving they will shut off, and the HID fog lights and the green indicator light on the actual button shuts off.
I dont think it's the bulbs or ballasts, any ideas? Potentially a bad solder job on my end on the switch under the glove box, or even the fog light button has a bad connection?

Since my S4 comes Saturday, I want to do this mod. This is old post, but maybe someone can quickly answer a couple questions:

    1. if I get H11 for the rubber grommet and use cotter pins and drill holes, have any of you that done this (w h7 or h11) have water or such issues into the fog light reflector area?
    2. what brand do you suggest? can i use something on ebay like this?
    3. what color 35w bulb will best match OEM HIDs?

    Thanks a lot.

No water issues. I used DDM. I think 4300k matches oEM. I used 6k & I like it.
