Lightbulb Hidden Subwoofer Install in Trunk

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So this is my first real post on this thread. I thought I would share a project that I finished a couple months ago on my A4. I love sound, but hate the fact that a sub takes up so much room in the trunk. I built a custom fiberglass enclosure for a 12" shallow mount Pioneer sub.

I started out by removing everything from the trunk.

I sacrificed a spare subwoofer box that I had to make the front body of the enclosure.

    Test fit...

    Fiberglass mat added...

I used metal pipe strapping to give the fiber mat shape and support while the epoxy resin dried...

Final test fit. Carpet was added to the front...

    Dynamat added...

    Final Product.

    Door closed...

    Door open...

So that's it. I did the project over two days during my fall break. It sounds great and was a lot of fun. The best part is that I have all my trunk space back. Now I just need to hide the amp.

Shit is clean! I like it! I don't use that compartment anyway. Would it have been better to gut out the plastic compartment and fab a box out of that? I wonder....

I actually thought about modding the plastic compartment that was in there, but it wouldn't accommodate the 12" sub. In addition to that the structural reinforcement that would be needed to be added to the plastic would be complicated. It was much easier to start from scratch. I did use the little rubber mat that was in the base of the compartment as a starting point for creating a template.

Hey, sorry about the pics. I have no idea why they aren't showing up. The sound quality is great. I have not noticed any noise from vibration or rattling. As far as the dynamat goes I just used some leftovers from a previous project that I had in my shop. It is sufficient for this install. I didn't want to dynamat the entire trunk because it would have been overkill and the extra weight was not wanted.

I realized that after posting. I'm guessing maybe with an 8 inch sub, it would be feasible. MAYBE a 10 in sub. Either way, that is a real clean job.

Nice clean install. I'm wanting to do something similar in my 2010 S4. On that same side panel I have a bunch of drives and electronics in there. Has anyone done a custom sub install on the current model A4/S4?

Damn dude that's sick!!! I have a 12" from my old car that i want to put in the A4 but don't want to take it out every time i want to put my golf clubs in my car. I would definitely pay for something like this.. you ever think about custom making these for other people or is that too time consuming?

Re: Hidden Subwoofer Install in Trunk

Just a tip for you. Next time use either automotive carpeting or felt to build your mold. wayyyy easier than trying to make it with fiberglass mat. Just stretch it to the shape you want and apply lots of fiberglass resin to the carpet or felt. But good looking setup man nice and stealth.
