Just a little heads up for everyone with a Revision A cam

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If you upgrade the fuel pump don't take any chances buy a new cam from audi. I had a whole in my cam follower and some wear on my fuel pump retainer cap. I mean within 6 months from install my cam was shot. Change the cam or don't upgrade your fp. I think the reason I was getting fuel cut, check engine lights and low trap speeds at the track is because of this.

It's recommended that when you install the pump you check both. And that you keep checking every 5k miles or so to make sure everything is good. I wouldn't say don't do it, just check it.

I had a B cam and it still went band, you have to keep a close eye on the caps.

with any fuel pump, you will experience excess cam lobe wear and/or follower. As one mentioned, it has to be checked ever so often. If you never checked in the 6 months you had your HFP, thats pretty epic =P

well, for some its worth it, others it's not. I personally dont like mods that require extra care or maintenance.

HFP, will give you the added fuel you need to post higher. If you go bt, you need it regardless!

I was thinking of doing the KMD follower but it might damage the cam since the follower may be to hard.

That would be a REAL fix instead of band-aids. I'm sure it would not be cheap. Hence why no one has done it yet.

A real fix needs to be put in place. Esp as more and more of you guys are upgrading to much bigger turbos.

I foresee many failed highly modified 2.0TSIs due to this cam lobe problem.

It would behoove the aftermarket to come up with a permanent fix. (read: aftermarket cam vendor and some other vendor for the fuel pump).

Re: Just a little heads up for everyone with a Revision A cam

When I was digging for info on how the B8 roller is setup I thought, would it be possible if you just capped off the hole for the existing FP and ran an inline electric pump? I know it would require huge pressure and that is possibly not made by something like that, but it's just a thought. Maybe someone with knowledge can chime in with something.

I don't think an electric pump would work because of the high pressure that goes through this system.

Re: Just a little heads up for everyone with a Revision A cam

After reading some more I realize that no electric can hit 1600, anyway this is for everyone who has a B cam and thinks they may be safe, remember to check it.

    Quoted from vortex:

    Quote Originally Posted by OOOO-A3

Since I found that I had the 'B' cam, and had no symptoms, I didn't worry about it.

    ---------------------

    Now (December):
I decided that since I have 53,000 miles on the original cam follower, I should go ahead and replace it. I figured it would have the black coating worn a bit, and maybe a mark on the inside.... You know, nothing major since the engine has the 'B' cam, NO aftermarket fuel pump, NO chip, oil changes every 5000 miles with Castrol 5w40 VW 502.00 oil, not beaten-on.... NO fuel cuts, NO CEL.

I bought a new follower Friday, thinking that it was probably a waste of money since the original was probably just fine.... but it wouldn't hurt to replace it "just in case"....

When I pulled the pump out Saturday to change the follower, I was like "Oh, **** me!" I wasn't prepared for this:

"Wait..." you might say. "Where's the ****ing clip from the bottom of the follower?!?"

Well, if you look back up at the pics of the pump, you might just see it hanging on the pump spring.... I retrieved it with a pair of needle-nose pliers, and it's all stretched out.

I couldn't see any pieces of the old follower anywhere, so I had nothing else to do but put in the brand new follower that I just spent $60+ on, and reassemble everything. I cranked it afterwards, let it idle to warmup, rev'd it and didn't hear any odd noises or see any fuel leakage from the fittings, so it's at least as drivable as it has been.

Due to a settlement with Audi over my A/C compressor, my warranty goes to 62k. Monday morning first thing I'll be going to the dealer (who hates me, I'm sure), and politely but firmly insisting on it being repaired ASAFP and me having a loaner in the mean time, since I need to do some roadtrips over the holidays.

I ****ing hate this engine. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it..... It is the biggest steaming pile of scheisse. I've wasted a metric assload of money on this car, and I'd like nothing better than to feed it into a crusher. I'm done with VW/Audi. I'm serious this time. Unless I can find a way to do a TDI swap, it's time for a Subaru.

Here's 24 pages of debate and horror pics of failed cam followers on vwvortex.

For me, the moral of the story is to check your cam follower every 5-10k miles especially if you are out of warranty!

You would be looking at about $600 in parts and then whatever the labor is, I think they quote 4 hours.

I'm pretty sure they won't begin to cover it until you get a fuel cut cel. Depends on the dealership though.

    Pete:

That "button" on the end of the piston assembly has to be pressed into the spring retaining collar until is stops (bottoms out). If you did this at home, please make sure that it is fully pressed in.

Also, if you replaced the button it means you had to remove the piston from the pump housing and press on the end of the piston to push the old button out of the spring retaining collar, correct? I really hope you were careful with the piston as far as cleanliness and scratches. You also needed to be careful when pushing the piston assembly back into the pump. There are some seals that the piston goes through and they only way I have ever seen them damaged is due to improper assembly or disassembly...basically people being rough and careless when pushing the piston through the seal assembly (inside the pump).

A new cam will not fix this problem. The main issue is the cam follower! You must check the follower of a modified HPFP every 5-7500 miles (this is also dependant on how hard you drive, there have been highly modified cars with 500WHP that have gone 20000 miles on one follower) and replace if it is worn. If you do this you will never need a new cam.

Wow this really sucks, no one here or on any other forums has high milage b7 with the 2.0t. I have a feeling that this engine will fail very early yet out of warranty as a result of this fuel pump cam problem. how ridiculous, i guess time to start looking for another car that wont have a stupid problem as a result of absolutely poor engineering.

Re: Just a little heads up for everyone with a Revision A cam

Auditude, i respect you giving people a heads up but unfortunately, it doesnt mean much. As other people have stated and as witnessed on vortex, both A and B cams have shown wear. The cam follower is what to watch for. I asked you if you checked yours in your "my cam is shot" thread-

Me- "did you check your cam and follower before adding the apr pump? if so, how many miles have you put on since then? I hear its 2-3k from another forum. btw i like kmd but that follower also gets some harsh words on another forum because it does not have the DLC coating which protects it."

Im still wondering if you checked it as you did NOT reply. The last statement i made in your thread explains why people have said that the KMD follower is WEAKER, not stronger, than stock. So turbo4s, i wish you luck with yours but let us know what it looks like next time you check it.

I have a 05.5 B7 A4 with 104,000 miles on my car ( im original owner of car) and have had no codes or anything and have some mods on my car for a little over 50,000 miles. The last time i checked the cam follower was at roughly at 75,000 miles and it had some wear but nothing to bad. I will pull the HPFP to check the follower and try to remember to take pics of it and post them up maybe this weekend.
