How to remove the rear fog bulb on 03 Avant?

I just got my Avant and the rear fog lamp is always on, even when the headlight button is pushed all the way in. So I am thinking about just taking the bulb out. Is this a simple task? Also do you guys know if it will make my tailight out warning light come on?.............sorry for the newbie question...........thanks in advance!!!

Very simple,

Pop the trunk, there is one screw on the inside to remove the headlight. Pop off the bulb tray off the back of the tail light find the rear fog i think its bottom right and see if the bulb is bad, but looking at the filament.

The fog light is in the left side tail light, right? The tail light retaining screw is accessed through a small plugged hole in the rear lid trim, using a Phillips point screw driver, the retaining screw does not need to be removed all the way, just loosen to release the tail light. To remove the housing, the light is shifted slightly out then two lugs in the forward edge are disengaged from the body, then the wiring connector is removed.

Yes, there will be a bulb failure warning without a bulb installed. The cause of the constant fog ON, should be located and fixed.

My advise is to use a magnetic tip philips screw-driver when removing the screw that holds the tail light in. If you drop that screw you have to pull the entire rear trunk panel off (not that hard, but more work than required to remove the tail light housing).


Before you go taking any bulbs out scan the car with VAG-Com to see if there is a code. It sounds like there could be some close loop in the circuit causing the light to stay on. Just removing the bulb may cause even more problems (short? etc...)

I don't have a Vag com yet and my closest dealer is like an hour away, that light is just buggin the hell out of me cuz it makes it look like I have a burnt out tail.

Yes, I am pretty sure will get a bulb-out warning if you remove the rear fog-light bulb.






As John (diagnosticator) stated, the root cause as to why this bulb stays on should be addressed.

1) scan the car with VAG-Com to determine where the fault may be (headlight switch, light itself?).

2) It would also be a good idea to pull the light housing off the car to inspect the terminals and wiring harness.

Once those things are reviewed and if they are found to be acceptable then its time to start tracing down the wiring harness from the headlight switch to the bulb and checking for continuity. This is a big step so we won't talk about this until all other options have been exhausted.
