    i need some definitive answers!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
as to whether or not an S-line TT steering wheels airbag will function properly in my B6 Avant. Ive been searching and reading a little bit about it but it doesnt seem as if anyone really really knows. Ive got one on the way, but if the airbag wont function im selling it. (i dont care how awesome it is) Im a bit concerned after reading Avanteix's?? thread about his wreck and his passenger side airbag went off, but not the drivers side. If someone could please shed some light on this situation it would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

Is there a way to deploy the airbag without having to hit something? If there is, we should start a fund to buy a bag and test it, for the purpose of everyones safety. I'm getting my lambo wheel soon and I also want to know this. If I get enough donations, I'll do the test.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

There is no indication in Avantiex's case that the driver's airbag was sent a deployment pulse from the airbag controller.
For a retrofitted TT SW, if the wiring is good, then there is no reason to believe the airbag won't deploy when activated. The chances for failure are no different than a stock air bag. There is no certainty 100 percent that the origninal airbag will always deploy either.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

dude, id seriously be down to chip in for that. check this thread out, its what is making me paranoid about it. but, also, in another thread on here, diagnosticator was saying there should be no reason it wont work if you splice it, or just hook up the second stage or something.

EDIT: haha, he beat me to it himself... ^^

Sure, a 9 volt battery will ignite the airbag.

well, i highly value your opinion diagnosticator, and i know in my heart youd never recommend something to someone that could possibly harm them. so, that being said, i guess im gonna hook mine up when it arrives. its just a scary thought thats all.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

and like i said, i would totally chip in to buy an airbag, and have someone who is trusted and has the knowledge to deploy it via a single stage, or by splicing the wires like one would when hooking it up to a B6.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

If you are using the seatbelt properly, the air bag does not have that much if any, actual effect for the driver's sake, the seatbelt pyro tensioner will tighten up and hold the driver from hitting the steering wheel full force with out the airbag as was the case for Avantiex's accident.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

My advise is if you are not willing to take the risk, by installing a retrofitted setup, then you should not mod the steering wheel.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

^^ correct, but what about, (god forbid) you get into some sort of an accident where you dont really have time to slam on the brakes. sure the seatbelt will snap tight, but id imagine youd take a face full of S-Line TT wheel.

This is what I've concluded all along.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

I am willing, is there a write up on how to splice the single stage into dual stage?

    (searching now)

Re: i need some definitive answers!

Even after a successfull bench test deployment, there is no gaurantee the same airbag setup as installed will deploy for sure.

There is a write up on Navplus.us about doing this, by "Proxus".

The pyro seatbelt tensioner functioning during a crash, doesn't depend on having applied the brakes first. With the seatbelts tensioned, it should not be possible to hit the SW full force in any case.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

ok, so i checked out the write up, and it seems pretty good. the only problem is, everywhere there is supposed to be a reference pic, it just shows a blue box with a question mark. pretty much, hes just saying though, that you splice the single stage with the dual stage, which in affect turns the dual stage into a single stage. so in essence, no matter how small, or large the impact is, the airbag will FULLY deploy instead of having the option to partly deploy in event of a smaller crash. i like this.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

Yes, but that's how the stock B6 ab deploys, IE, single stage.

Re: i need some definitive answers!

correct, i was just worried though, that in the event of a large crash, it would only open half way. id obviously prefer it open all the way when theres a small crash, rather than only open halfway when theres a large impact, which seems to be the case. hooray!
