Is it worth it to clean used O2's before I install them? Best method?

    I just purchased 2 used pre-cat O2's b/c mine are shot!

I was going to clean them before I installed them but wanted to make sure first how to do it or if its even worth doing.

Here is what I found on the net. Good advice?

Determining ways to clean oxygen sensor raises a basic question: Will the cleaned oxygen sensor be any good to work properly? Since the oxygen sensor is exposed to high heat in the exhaust system to the car, the main contaminant likely to be present is a thick layer of baked carbon on the sensor tip, which doesn't dissolve easily in any solvents. So one way to clean O2 sensor with this carbon deposit is to heat the oxygen sensor tip with a blow torch (like propane). Expose the sensor tip to the torch till it's about to turn red, then dip the sensor tip quickly into water followed by cleaning the tip by blowing compressed air. This will make the carbon deposit to break free. We recommend repeating the procedure a few times until the carbon deposits are removed from the sensor tip.

Another way to clean the oxygen sensor is by using CRC brand QD electronic cleaner to remove fuel and oil contaminants. It's a special cleaner and doesn't leave any residue on drying. Keep a safe distance between the sensor and cleaner nozzle when spraying the cleaner on the sensor and wear gloves and safety goggles to prevent the cleaner from affecting your hand and eyes.

Try it, check for codes, report back.

Normally, I would just say don't be cheap and just replace them.

lol I know I figured I would get that. I got a package deal of used sensors (O2's, EGT) for a great deal.

the first method sounds more like a sure fire way to fuck things up.

I would install it first and see how quickly it switches with vag-com or even a universal OBDII to PC reader and digimoto, it may be just fine.
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!

I totally agree! I wasn't feeling that torch method.

What about using some carb/choke cleaner?

I would like to clean a little carbon off them before I install them. They are going in this week when I do my cam adjuster seals.

Try letting them soak in some Seafoam?
