Umm...Why am i getting Flashed/Highbeamed at least twice a night???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a B7 with OEM Bi-Xenons (owner for only a few weeks)
Everytime i start up, the lights do there little dancing sequence (so amusing to me) and seem to level just right. The cut off is about eye level 20 ft away and hood level about 5 feet away.

I got the car about 3 weeks ago and finally drove it a bit this weekend, and today. I noticed at night i at least get flashed about 2-3 times a night. WTH!!
I keep my lights on Auto, So im wondering if theres alot of city lights where im at that, they shut off. But i doubt it.

My old car with HID aftermarket kit in a halogen housing and 6k lights with awful beam never got the flash treatment.

Should i get use to this with OEM HID's?

Bust out your piece and light them up! Hahah, i don't know man, i had that problem but i don't get flashed that much anymore. I used to flash people back if they thought my high-beams were on but now i am just too lazy.

does your headlight(s) flicker when driving? that may be a reason. Or your beams may be pointed too high. have a friend drive by and see what he thinks.

Re: Umm...Why am i getting Flashed/Highbeamed at least twice a night???

i would assume it has something to do with the auto level feature. Because if you ever pay attention to newer audi/bmw/mercedes vehicles with this feature you'll notice from a distance the lights look very blue/purple but every time they hit a bump they change to a white/yellow color. And i've noticed that when they do this they look like they get brighter.

The reasoning the headlights change color the way they do is because in order to maintain your headlights at the same level when your car dips, they raise, when it bounces up they lower thus changing the angle at which the light is being projected. And the projector is the reason the light may look a different color intensity than they are. Because i'm assuming you have factory HID's which are probably 4300k like most. Which would be a fairly white color temperature. But because the projector bends the light waves in the way it does, the color changes to the human eye.

So maybe some idiots see the change in the light color (or flickering i guess it could be called) as you flashing your brights so they do it back... Where as your old HID's were most likely one solid color no matter what so it didn't look like there was any difference. That would be my guess.

i'd say your projectors are aimed too high. if your low beam cutoff rises the futher away from the car the target gets, that's wrong. the cutoff should get lower. head to your stealership and find another b7 with hids, park next to it, and compare beam patterns on the same wall.

cool im gonna check it out.
when i first got the car i had a friend drive it home behind me, and i did noticed when the car hit bumps, the lights would flicker brighter, like most HID equipped cars do on the road that used to blind me.

I just have never been on the dishing out end. Just the receiving end. I will have the dealer check it out when i take it in to fix a stupid rear bulb fault that only comes on when my AUTO lights activate.

yeah so it's probably the auto level feature then like i thought. Cause i've gotten flashed too and i'm even lowered quite a bit haha. My lights are standard white, but from a distance and to an onlooker they are very purple, but again i have auto level so they do that "flicker" back and forth between colors. The worst are the new BMW's like the 745Li, they are really bright when they flicker because they also have adaptive headlights so they turn right and left depending on what way you turn the wheel, and they also go up and down during acceleration and deceleration and all that stuff.

So i guess you can have the cutoff level looked at, but it's nothing to really worry about, your beam sounds about the right height. Might be a slight bit high though.

The flickering of blues and purples will happen regardless of auto leveling. The color comes from the cut off that the projector makes.. so when a car hits the bump it may show the range of the colors depending on where you are looking from. Take a look at bryson's thread to see how he made a sharper cut off that produces more colors using the stock 4300k Xenon's.

Re: Umm...Why am i getting Flashed/Highbeamed at least twice a night???

i know you can enhance or thicken the cut off color and swap out TSX/S2K/TL projectors and such. But it has to do with the angle the light is being projected still and auto leveling can play a part in that because it changes the angle from which you are viewing the light.

Does it happen on hilly roads? You may be going up while the oncoming car is going down and sees directly into your lights and assumes you have brights on.

Or, like after I installed my xenons, I realize I had to adjust their aiming as mine was aimed a bit high. One way to test is pull up behind a car, your cutoff line should be just above their bumper or so.

Have you check how high they are. There is a white screw at the top of the headlights that make it go up and down.

    Best way to retaliate flashers....

....keep a small jar of pennies in your center consol and just give one or two a toss as you pass said flasher. If your aim is on target, they'll think twice next time....

In all seriousness though, you should go into your dealer. They should have a wall that you can line up with markings on it so they can be adjusted properly.

true story. you (the OP) are not aimed properly. at 25-30 feet, the cutoff should in essense be the same height as the center of the projector when measured from the ground. the beams should NOT get higher on the wall the further you get from it.

the fact that your beams are at *eye level* at 50 ft. is why people (who have your lights in their eyes) are flashing you

If you ever did I would be sure you would never be able to throw a penny again. Unless you can throw with your mouth...

That is most ridiculous thing I've ever heard as a way to "get back" at people who flash their brights at you.

It's not like they're being mean by doing so.

Anyways, your obvious lack of immaturity is uncool.

Re: Umm...Why am i getting Flashed/Highbeamed at least twice a night???

checked it again thoroughly my beams are at proper height. when i pull behind a car its on there bumper. from 15-20 feet away its about hood level. not eye level.

and the other night i got flashed and i noticed it was only after i i came around a slight bend in the road, and the last time i was flashed was right after i made a right turn. Somebody stated above that it is the angle of the projector when its "adjusting or adapting" around a corner. That what i think it is. I observed a few other cars like the new 3 series with HID and they seem to do the same thing to me. its super bright when they come around the corner.

    so im not worried.

The point is that there is no reason to "retaliate" to someone flashing their high beams at you.

If you want to be nitpick my post... it's merely not "mearly"

p.s. My hand is raised. I would make sure you never threw another penny again.

I was meaning for people to raise their E-hand if they would ever actually toss a penny out of their window. lol

Also, it's actually "possess", but i'm not gonna hate on you for inadvertently missing an S.

Re: Umm...Why am i getting Flashed/Highbeamed at least twice a night???

Funny this thread should pop up. I got flipped off on Thursday night on some side street at a little light. I was in the pocket making a left and while waiting for the light to change to green the car directly across from who would be crossing the intersection blasts his high beams several times. So I was like dumb ass these are factory HID's, so I did the logical thing and flipped my high beams. Sure enough as he passes me, he had his hand framed in the window flipping me the bird. Part of me wants to think that he was just pissed because his 98 benz roller skate SUV didn't have Xenons, but I have gotten the high beams several times in the last week. I don't think my alignment is wrong, I just had the stealership replace the passenger side housing because the light was way out of line and the adjustment was defective.

Makes me think I should switch to 6k bulbs. I will post a pic of my beam pattern!

don't assume you're aimed properly just because the dealer does it...they've done mine wrong 4 times in a row now.

Re: Umm...Why am i getting Flashed/Highbeamed at least twice a night???

I get flashed a lot too. I usually flash my bright very quickly to let them know, and they continue to flash theirs anyway dumbasses

I have ZiZa yellow fogs, and like 50% of cars flash me when I have those on too.

The best part is on the highway when my headlights are too bright for someone I'm about to pass, and they get really pissed and turn their brights on after I pass them. They're all angry trying to piss me off, but all of my mirrors are auto dimming so I just start laughing when my headliner gets brighter because I know they're trying to blind me suckers
    Ignorance is bliss.
