I don't know about the 2.8, but I can do the throttle body adapt without VAG com on my 1.8t. I actually only found out maybe a month ago it can be done with VAG com. But for the 1.8t, simply remove the negative cable from the battery for 15-20 min (for good measure), place negative cable back on, place key in starting position without cranking for 15 min (again, for good measure).
As for Vag Com, it would be suggested to get the actual Ross-Tech cable from the website. The registration key is on the USB cable (as far as how I think it goes) and you simply download the software from Ross-Tech and go to work. The Ross-Tech cable vs the Ebay cable (you will need to download software and you can use the software without purchasing the registration key, but you will not be permitted certain functions such as logging) is that w/the Ross-Tech cable I read threads you will be able to do more capabilities than with the ebay cable/registration key. Plus it can work with a wider variety of vehicles.
As for myself, I have the ebay cable w/registration key. But I bought a laptop from an Audizine member with it already. This route can always be taken, but I would suggest to get the actual Ross-Tech key vs the Ebay cable/registration key. But if you do decide to go the ebay route, you would go to Ross-Tech.com, download the newest version (you can use it with the ebay cable without purchasing license key, but you will be denied certain functions), then purchase the registration key for $100 (I can not recall price of the Ross-Tech cable. I think around $200 or so).
Edit: Look what I found.
