Wraps come off Audi Sportback concept in Detroit
    January 12, 2009 - Audi AG, Ingolstadt

Five-door with coupe-style silhouette hints at future Audi design vocabulary.

    • Design study combining five-door hatchback versatility with coupe desirability debuts at the NAIAS in Detroit (Jan 11-25)
    • 4,950mm in length (A6 Saloon 4,927mm), 1,930mm wide (A6 Saloon 1,855mm), 1,400mm high (A6 Saloon 1,459mm)
    • New 3.0-liter TDI features world's cleanest diesel technology enabling compliance with stringent emissions regulations in all 50 U.S. states and with proposed 2014 EU6 limits - this engine will become available in the U.S. and Europe during 2009
    • 225PS and 550Nm, 0-62mph in under seven seconds, 152mph top speed, 47.8mpg potential, CO2 output of no more than 156 g/km
    • Engine start/stop system, energy recuperation under braking, low power consumption electromechanical steering, low rolling resistance tires
    • New version of seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission and quattro permanent four-wheel-drive
    • A4 and A5-based suspension set-up with repositioned front axle, Audi drive select with Continuous Damper Control (CDC) shock absorbers, ceramic brakes
    • Interior trimmed almost completely in leather, from the dashboard right through to the boot

The new Audi Sportback concept has Detroit in a spin this week with a seamless blend of sports coupe desirability and five-door hatchback practicality that has made it one of the undisputed stars of the 2009 North American International Automobile Show. The sleek five-door GT is the latest in a long line of Audi design studies, many of which have transferred virtually unchanged to the production line, and not only offers a glimpse of Audi's future design vocabulary, but also raises the stakes technologically with a new 47mpg-plus TDI engine featuring the world's cleanest diesel technology.

As its name suggests, the Audi Sportback concept is a variation on the theme first defined in the Audi range by the A3 Sportback with its combination of sleek sports hatch styling and five-door versatility, and signals the brand's intention - as previously demonstrated by the A1 Sportback concept - to dramatically expand its line-up of Sportback models. glass roof looks good, i always liked them on the 911 targas. Front grill looks a little plain, hopefully they use a different one for production.

this thing is looking really good, i've been looking at it off and on all week and it has really grown on me...so much better than what Motortrend projected it would look like back in 05.

SUCH a gorgeous car. If the A7 looks anywhere near as good as this car, then wow. I'm really hoping we see these design cues make their way into the future lineup. I'm in love with that face.

Re: Audi AG: Wraps come off Audi Sportback concept in Detroit

Joined this forum strictly due to this next generation A7/S7. I am working in Frankfurt for the next month or so and can't find any information here about it's potential. I also noticed that it was suppose to be at the Frankfurt auto show in Feb but don't see any info on it's presence at that event. I've seen all the "artist" and "leaked" images on the net but have yet to find more solid discussion so I thought I would try this forum. I previously owned 7-series BMW's, CLK55 AMG's and currently am driving a 2004 Acura TL which I am planning to replace with the Audi A7 if I can find a way to order one. I also am considering the Porsche Panamera and or even possibly the AM Rapide (although the later is a bit beyond my current budget) Ideally, I'd like to do the European delivery option that the BMW and Merc dealers have been offering in the past. Hoping to learn more about this competitor to this market.

Unfortunately this is just a concept at the moment, as no "official" word on an A7/S7 has come out of Audi AG. We should be hearing more about the coming model in the months ahead.

Re: Audi AG: Wraps come off Audi Sportback concept in Detroit

I was at the Porsche museum on Saturday (we have offices across the street) and I SWEAR I have NEVER seen SO many Cayenne's in my entire life (nearly every other car). I guess we know what Porsche is doing with it's excess inventory (leasing them to their employees cheaper than the employee could lease a "cheapo" car...
