so got a ticket for my tints

Driving back from microcenter friday evening.

HEavy traffic heading back home so i decided to just cruise in the right lane with the slow cars. ( to many idiots zig zagging in the # 1 & # 2 lanes )

Theres a cop sitting on the right shoulder going in reverse up until I get closer to him which he stops. At this point he is about 6-7 cars ahead of me on my right.

As I slowly drive by him at all 5mph I see him checking out the cars through his side view mirror.
I then pass by him and next thing you know he pulls into traffic and puts his lights on. I merge over and as the cop is approaching me he's asking for my license etc....He then tells me he's stopping me for my tinted windows.

I'm thinking to myself, out of all things Highway Patrol Cops could pull someone over for its for tinted windows! He even came up to my car with the tint window meter and measured the tint. 33% showed up on the gauge.

So instead of bitching and arguing with him like I was going to do I just took the ticket and didnt speak a word to him. Meanwhile you have cars next to me on the road with darker tints but since MY CAR stands out on the highway lets mess up his day.

I had the same thing happen to me. I got pulled over at night going to a friends house for my tint. I just took it off and the ticket got dropped. NY is getting very strict with the tint now. A lot of shops in my area are getting in trouble for installing it on vehicles. So most of them quit installing it.

this is my first one with the audi.

the other 5 times were in the accord. Got stopped at check points. Meanwhile its the same tint. 35%. Secondly, NYS law states tints have to be no less than 70%.

70% tint is like having no tint whatsoever.
but, as long as i have side view mirrors my rear windows can be painted black for all they care. As long as the fronts are 70 it doesnt matter.

Im just going to re-register my car back in Florida. I like privacy when driving around and feel tints offer that.

The NYPD they should be working on their image as opposed to ticketing for tints.

i have been singled out by the same trooper twice! he did a u turn to come and catch me the great criminal! i even told him, well, its darker than 35% so ill just take my ticket and he insisted on checking it and got mad when i told him just write me a ticket

I got the same last October - a $67 ticket for my tints.

Allowance is 70%, I guess I asked for it.

Mine tested at 15%.

fl law is 20%. i run 15% all around with a sun strip. ive seen dumb ass honda's running with red mirror tint on all glass including windshield. ive only been hassled for my tint once, and i kept telling him it was legal and fumbled for my receipt until he dropped the subject. he then hassled me for my sunstrip being too low. no ticket, but the original reason he pulled me over, was because i didnt have my headlights on before the sun was up (driving to work at 7am).

Register a car in a state where tints are legal ftw =D When I was 16 I bought a prelude from ohio, kept the plates for 2 years (she agreed on it) had full limo tints all around except the front window. I cant tell you how many times I had cops chase me down if they see me drive by, and then notice my plates and turn away. haha good times!

drop the s from tints, tint is already plural. To solve the problem, get a doctors note. Supposedly it gets you out of the ticket. I think a couple of people here on AZ did this and it worked.

if they are legal in the state which the car is registered in, its legal to drive thru other states with them on. you obviously cant easily take them off when passing thru a different state. if they are illegal in your home state though, a cop could probably either write you a ticket for being illegal in your home state, or for being illegal in the state that you are in. and a cop can write you a ticket weather or not there is even something wrong, which is the reason i get to go to the DMV tomorow, then to the police station to file a complaint against an officer.

I pretty much always use the excuse that I had them done in maryland and that my car is there for most of the year while I go to school. The limit is 20% on the front windows there. It's a $52 ticket in jersey. Im keepin them on till I get a ticket bc they look sick and make the inside more comfortable.

It is called a Window Tint Exempt. The problem is that the reasons for a person to be able to fill out the form correctly involve some rather intense eye problems. Another way to legally have limo (5% window tint) in NY state is to have your vehicle registered as a taxi/limo/etc. One would need to aquire an E-Class license (same license as a Class D exept you pay maybe an extra $15 or so on application fees) and then register the vehicle as a taxi, or whatever classification they have on the registration form. An issue with this is I have no idea how car insurance would be handled if your vehicle was registered as such.

Which is true, but at 2% off of the "legal limit", and many other things to do like cleaning up trash on the side of the road; could'nt this officer spent his time better?

I understand that police departements around the country are trying to raise money because of all of the cut budgets, but cmon, you can find plenty of money in areas that actually need to be solved.

he didnt even show me courtousy for being related to someone in his precient and being the nephew of the head of the D.E.A. ( in newark NJ )

to top it off the sun was setting in my face so my car lit up like a x-mas tree.
but, law is the law. if 70% is legal and anything below that isnt than i guess my tints arent legal.

So i'll just rip off the two fronts for now.

Just looked up NYS law and it says that the front and back (side) windows must allow at least 70% light in. With SUVs and minivans i feel like most of them on dealer lots have much darker rear side windows. Just think of any Suburban or Explorer/Expedition that you see on the street...

The Law in NYS:

You can tint your rear windows 0% if you want as long as you have side view mirrors.

front driver and passenger windows have to be no less than 70%

OK I had some sympathy for you before and this law is often just another tax burden on law-abiding folk, but your nepotistic attitude is just disgusting. Why should you get a break for being related to someone? Why? You and me could commit the same "offense" and you're supposed to get away with it (and I have to pay for it) just because of who your family is? WTF is this, the USA or Saudi Arabia?
