    Noob mistake clear corner mod

I am posting this because its really embarrassing and I know there is someone out there who might do the same thing if I don't speak up... Here it goes

So, take the headlight out of the oven and pry it open. Pop out the amber cover and wallah, a nice clear headlight. So I go to put an AMBER bulb in where the clear bulb used to be and because there is a mirror around the bulb housing, it was like I had never taken off the amber cover! The amber color of the bulb was reflecting all around the mirror!

Just to clear things up, I was planning on going with the chrome or silver covered bulb from the beginning but couldn't find them anywhere near my area so I settled with an amber bulb. Never settle for anything when you are doing your mods. Make sure its right the first time and take your time if you have to...

So now I have a pissed off A4 in my garage with no lights and a missing bumper because I have to wait for the Chrome bulbs that shine amber to come in the mail. Oh well, at least I can custom paint the light housing in the meantime.

If you're going to respond, be gentle... I had a long day

Just seal it back up and replace those bulbs later. You can get them out of the back.

The stock lights wont shine amber(i think), that is why the cap is there in the first place right? I have Bi xenon.

I left the lights off the car because I am going to paint the housing black too. ...then its back to the oven and back on the car to wait for the silver bulbs like JMG and Kurupt Hawaiian did. Thanks for tip guys.

Sorry no pics, i left the car in pieces at the in-laws. Will take some when my fiasco is complete.

Like everyone said though, you can change bulbs with the headlights and bumper installed on the car. So you don't need to wait for the bulbs to arrive to button everything back up.

Re: Noob mistake clear corner mod

I know. I have to wait to put the lights back in the car because the light housing needs to be painted first and I couldn't get to that today. After I get everything painted then I will but it all back together and when I get the bulbs, just pop em right in from the back. No big deal, have an extra rig that I can drive anyways.

Sorry for not being clear guys.

I think its a lot of easier on a b6, not positive though. The time it takes all depends on how well you are familiar of doing it. It can take an hour or it can take a day, just depends

There just isn't enough time in the day fellas. I will have to finish this tomorrow night because there is not enough time for me to work on this after I get home from work. So tonight you get to meet, Two-Face.

Re: Noob mistake clear corner mod

It was just a weird scenario how i couldn't make a set time for this project. I don't want to get into it but with the painting of the silver piece inside the housing and popping out the amber lenses, the project takes about 4 hours. If you're just popping out the amber lenses though, it will take about 1-2hours. If there is any advice i can give you, its have all the tools you need so your not running to the store.

Finally! The only thing I have really done technical besides installing a Carbonio CAI. If you're scared to do this mod, just go for it and read the directions step by step. Also, if you're going to open the lights, you might as well paint it while you're there. Good luck!

Thats exactly what I'm going to do. I'm swinging for the fence. As soon as weather permits, i'm popping off my bumper to install a snub mount, POSSIBLY swap grilles, AND CC and hopefully paint the headlights. Problem is, I don't have access to a garage so it all has to be put back together by days end.

What kind of paint did you use, and how did you do it? Did you remove the hi/low beams, or did you just tape over them when you painted the housing?

Actually, once you separate the lense from the housing, that chrome piece that you want painted can be unscrewed by using a really small star bit. I think its a t-8 or t-5 star. Then you can just put a little bit of primer on it to prep it and paint it. You don't need to worry about taping anything off which is the best part.

I am not sure what type of paint it was but its the kind that is good for plastic. I just talked to the guys at my local auto paint shop and they new what i wanted. Also, get a clear coat spray to seal the deal.

You have messed up you bumper aligment. Check your gap between the bumper and the hood. Not good

Yep, looks like you need to mess around with some of those screws/bolts back there which fine-tune the alignment of the bumper. I've heard they're kind of a bitch to reach, but it shouldn't require you to completely remove and put back.

^ He might not have set his bumper on the adjusters. They are located on your crash bar. The first time i did mine they didn't seat correctly.

You can see it on the far left side of the crash bar in this picture:
