    Painting Trunk Trim DIY

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I decided to paint my trunk trim a gloss black to match the car. It came out amazing and I am very satisfied with the look. Very easy to do. Start to finish took 3 hours.
    PICS:
Everything you need, is in my trunk: newspaper, masking/painters tape, primer, paint, and clearcoat.
    First: tape off everything.

Second: make sure everything is sealed so there will be no overspray or leaks.
    \
Third: Personally, I found it easier to tape off the trunk lid, rather then leaving the trunk open and tape off the inside.

Fourth: Lay down some primer. 2 coats was enough for me.

Fifth: Put on 3-4 coats of gloss or matte black paint. I chose gloss.

Sixth: Put on 2-3 coats of clearcoat. Sorry, no pics. But, it's clear so you dont need it.
    FINISHED PRODUCT:

Yea, the cars a little dirty. Will be washed in time.

Thanks to my buddy Jason for the help and the pictures.
Any questions, feel free to ask via in-forum or PM. Hope you all enjoy.

You are going to hate yourself when you find out how easy that piece is to pop out. Took me all of about 2 mins to get it out, and took me about 30 mins to paint it. I let it dry for two days in the garage, then put it back on the car.

Just need to use a trim piece removal tool to make sure you don't damage the bumper.

It's also a great time to make sure everything under there is really clean. When I was prying it open, took me about 15 mins just to clean under there. After I'd had my car for 3 days, it got paintballed, and some of the residue was still under there....

Look good It does pop out, but who cares now that it's done haha

Did the finish come out smooth? It's supposed to be about 60 degrees for paint to lay perfect, but I've never tried an aerosol in the winter
    Ignorance is bliss.

I know a couple of friends that used that method and damaged their bumpers. As long as you're careful though, you should be fine.

you could always use plasti-dip to paint it, and if you don't like it, just peel it off

Does the "LE" on your license plate stand for law enforcement? Never seen a plate like that.

there's 2 forms of plasti dip that are readily available at places like home depot. there's the stuff in a small paint can (you can "dip" tool handles or other stuff in it, to give them that rubbery textured grip) or you can buy it as a spray can just like any other type of spraypaint. a bunch of people have done a few writeups. i got a couple of cans myself to paint my grille, rear diffuser, and that little bumper strip. the benefit of doing the front grille with plasti dip rather than paint, is that it won't chip as easy. also, you can peel it off if you get bored of the look. no sanding, no primering either. just clean the surface and dry before painting.
