Engine rattling noise

Recently my V6 A4 has been making a rattling noise. After diving it around it quiets down but i still hear it.

From a cold start, it's pretty loud.

Any ideas?

Sounds like lifters.

or a cam chain tensioner going bad.

A mechanic said it was the waterpump and quoted me about 1200 for the work to replace it.

Does that sound right to anyone?

The reason why it is louder with a cold start is because metal expands when it becomes warm; tightening it into place. I had some rattling noises with my V6 and it turned out that my right exhaust got loose from its hanger and my rear left shocks needed a new bushing. Didn't cost me more than $50 to fix it.

Pop your head into the hood or wherever the sound is coming from and listen for yourself. Could just be a bolt rattling around.

Before you spend $150, make sure you will be changing the correct part.
