    lost gears?

My wife was out driving the A6, and calls saying it's broken.
I head over to where she is, and the car won't go in first, second, or reverse. It goes into 3rd-6th with no problem.

Since I've been adjusting my shifter, that was my first thought. I messed around with it for a while, but the best I've been able to accomplish is being able to get it in 1st and 2nd, but it feels like I'm pushing it in against a 50 lb. weight, and getting it back out of those gears involves pulling against that same weight.

The car works great when it's IN gear, and doesn't pop out or anything.

Thoughts? Is there anything that it can get hung up on under the car?

Sounds as if you have discovered the problem.

Possibly, but I went through and readjusted it, using the 3-and-7 degree angle setup, as well as a few other tricks I learned from JHM when I first installed it, and it's not at all like the "it won't go in gear" issues I had from an out-of-alignment shifter.

Or you may have discovered the infamous 1-2 shift collar problem... There is videos on JHM's site explaining how/why it goes bad. Very common issue on our trans..

adjusting made some gears come back and others disappear

    good luck!

    Re: lost gears?

JHM makes a great rebuild kit. I know two people who did it so far. Mine is starting to act up, but I am not there yet. Both of them loved it. They kept the stock gearing, but JHM also offers an upgraded 6th gear (for add'l $) that lowers your cruising rpms and increases top speed you are geared for. They have two levels of improved 6th, and the more dramatic of the two brings your 80 mph cruise from 3k rpm to 2450 rpm. So gas mpg is very improved. That same set brings the top speed (hp allowing) you are geared for from 189 to 229

The kit itself is not too bad cost wise for what you get. The cost adds up if your clutch & fly are old, because it would be dumb to not change them while its all apart.. My fly and clutch are both pretty new, so its just gonna be the kit when I do it.. Check it out-

    Re: lost gears?

Yeah, I was checking that out. I just did the clutch and flywheel right before Christmas. I wish this would have failed first, to lump all that labor into one time.

I'm waiting on pricing back from a locally recommended place, to see if they do it or I ship the tranny to JHM. If I had a garage, I'd be willing to take a shot at it, but I don't.

I hear that.. I had to replace a clutch twice in about 6-8 months.. Once when I went stage 3, then again when I cooked that clutch. Now it will be down again for the rebuild... Ugh!!

    Re: lost gears?

So, I'm thinking this time I'm going to yank the engine & tranny, fix the tranny, and install the lesser-mileage motor with new turbos, timing belt, etc....

So, count on not seeing any posts about my car running for a bit.
