ive been looking for a new key fob seeing as tho i only got one key with the purchase of my car and i wanna know what am i lookin for on the car to identify what key fob i need(ive been looking for the fob online and just keep seein #'s)

if all you need is the remote portion, b5's use the 2 button face (+panic), but iirc, you can program the 3 button remotes for the doors, and with a remote trunk latch, have a functioning trunk button as well. you can get one at the dealer, but they will try to charge labor fee to program it.

a replacement key may need to be programmed to the vehicle (based on immobilizer version), but the remote itself can be programmed without a scan tool.

so if i jus buy any 2 button audi fob it should b able to b programed to my car?

You can program it yourself. The dealer will rape you on the keys.

i think you have to have a programed key in the ignition and put the other in the door... hold the button for like 15-30 seconds......


that is how we did the wifes cabrio


but i sold a key on here i think and the guy told me he only paid like 30 to get it programmed

if its anything like programming method for vws it was something like put the current key in the door and turn it while putting the new key in the ignition turn it to on then hold the unlock button for 15 seconds or something and it should honk... does that sound right?


Can any b5 key be reprogrammed to fit another b5 or are there some numbers on the current remote that have to match up with a potential new remote in order for it to be able to be programed?

open your current key, it will be something like 4do.blah.blah

you gotta find one that matches yours....... that is what the guy asked me when he bought my other key........ and if it is a blank you will have to get it cut i think
