fuel pump goes WHIR WHIR WHIR

So I noticed I had a flat tire (yay) and while trying to inspect it I turned the car on, and rolled it forwards about a foot to check the rest of the tire. (car started fine idled fine and I turned it off almost immediately) Well I go and get some fix-a-flat because I can't see any punctures or blow out in the tire (almost brand new tires )

Fix-a-flat says to have the valve stem at 4-8 o clock, so I try to turn the car back on to roll it forwards a little more, and all I get is fuel pump noise and maybe one or two fires. WTF. Car only has about 1/4 tank of gas because I'm a moron and it's been freezing almost every day, and isn't supposed to warm up any time soon. So for now I put in some dry gas and am waiting for the temperature to reach a whopping 16 degrees so I can try again. Oh and my car is still sitting on the rim because you have to drive after filling the tire, and I'm not about to use the widow maker on the icy parking lot.

Anybody ever start their car without a problem, and then have the pump s a d on start-up about half an hour later in cold weather?

does the pump make any boise when you turn thr key? It will prime a few times and then stop even if you turn the key, if your lines are frozen the ideal thing would be to get the car inside, otherwise add more gas deicer and maybe some more fuel, and hope for the weather to heat up, did you try and pump the tire without any tire fix, it could be worth a try, use a small car pump you can plug in the lighter.

If nothing else see if you smell gas in ther oli this will tell if fuel is getting to tthe engine, also maybe pull your plugs, if theu loog wet and smell like gas you need to clean them, the car is flooded and will not start otherwise (ask me how I know), hope it gets you going!

I honestly have never heard the fuel pump prime a few times with the car keyed, maybe my hearing is shot.

yopu can usually hear it when you turn the key but not strat the car, it will only prime once every key turn, and once it is maxed out, it will no longer do it until the car has run. Try removing the back seat to hear better, it is on the passenger side of the car, you can also remove the round steel cover to gain acces to the pump if you need to look further.

I just tried to relieve pressure at the fuel rail so that I could prime it again to see if it is indeed priming, but when I took the cap off it shot a little bit of fuel out, and then when I pushed that little pin in with the screw driver nothing came out... going to key on and off for a bit and see if I can't get it started

Re: fuel pump goes WHIR WHIR WHIR

alright, so... I can get it to shoot that initial first bit of fuel at me when I take the cap off if I prime it every time, so the fuel pump is working thank god. I'm just guessing that the lines have frozen up, and I'm not sure I can do anything about that...

as far as I know there should be no fuel coming out when you take the cap off, maybe the valve is out alittle too much, try and do it without the cap on, get a helper to key the car and watch the valve, I think it is like a bycicle valve so if you get a little tool they use to take valves out you can be sure it is in tight.

pull out a spark plug and see if it is wet with fuel, trust me it is worth the 5 mins to be sure.

If you can hear your pump prime (turn key off, turn key on... pump noise) then see if it's priming the fuel rail. Check it buy letting off pressure in the rail like you did by pushing in on the valve. Then run the pump prime (key off to on, a few times to be sure) then see if the pump has re-press'd the fuel rail.
