Just some stuff on my mind (Springs/Shocks)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So anyways, im in the market for new shocks and springs, so here it is, i have Koni FSD/Eibachs right now and i want to go a bit lower, so either get H&R/Bil setup or get H&R Street Perf Coilovers? give me some feedback on both and some pics with them installed, so i can take a look, also i backed out of my BBS LM Reps custom order, and got a different set of wheels *wink wink*so as of now i loose $200 on the down payment, Zoeb from wheeldudes.com said i can ask somone to pay me the $200 and they can take over the rest of the payments ($1100) and have the wheels in 2 months shipped and ready to go, you can have either 19x8.5 or 19x9.5 or staggered with both 35ET and hub centric or made for spacers either one, and they have custom coloring also, so if anyone is interested let me know, Other than that, have a nice day.

H&R/bil because its alot cheaper. I cant afford coil overs, because for less than what they cost, I can get those springs, shocks, and a set of H&R sway bars. Unless of course you need the adjustability, then chrisbostonusmc makes a great point.

If the roads that you drive are not that great i wouldnt get h&r coils. from my own experince they were too harsh for daily driving. They would be great for weekend or track but not for daily, too stiff.

I say you should ditch the coils and get an air ride suspension and slam it down this will be the ultimate in adjustability

Oh I love where your head is at!!! I will have air ride summer 2010 mark my words. Untill then I need to install the PSS9's that lay in bed next to me

Frank, I voted for H&R but be prepaired for a bouncy ride. You cannot go as low with PSS9's but they have adjustable dampining and the car I rode in that had them felt better than my stock sport suspension.

Eitherway, if you have the dough I would do C/O no doubt. Only way to dial in your ride height.

I think it comes down to if you are actually going to adjust the coils? I myself wouldn't. I usually just find somewhere that I like where it looks and never touch them again. At least on all the other coils I've had, thats what I've done. My vote is for spring/shock combo.

On a side note....For the last week, I have been researching airbags and seriously considering it. Have you ever thought about doing that?

There is definately something to be said about never adjusting the C/O again because I have the same thoughts BUT, for me it was worth going this route becasue if I went springs and ended up unhappy with the ride height not I start all over and end up with the same pricing as C/O. Plus if I sell these in a year or so they will still have very good value compared to shock/springs.

I have done my fair share of research on bags. At this point I choose not to install on my DD. Also, you would need to source your own parts because still to my knoweledeg there is not a kit for our car. Not that big of a problem but you better know what you are doing otheriwse very expensive mistakes.

You can do bags over C/O or not. Either way the setup will easily be over 2000 for our car. VW can get by with like 1000-1500 but they have kits to choose from.

Hey Frank i had the same problem deciding to what combo i want to go with.
And the look that i was going for was not to have a big gap between the fenders and tire so i picked the H&R and Bilstien Combo love the ride feels like a true sport setup and no rubbing with 245/40/18 tires.........

I agree but I have seen other cars with same setup and the results were not as perfect. Plus with a spring/shock combo it always seems front or rear sits higher. Not in the case above but I cant deal with that.

PMR is as low as I'd even think about (and if I recall you were more concerned initially about FSD's squishiness, wanted stiffer; which means just do struts and keep Eibachs -- can go to H&R springs next if that doesn't suffice). That's a good looking car you have there, PMR.

This is the exact thread I was looking for. Okay, so when we say H&R Springs, are we referring to the Sport Springs or the Race Springs? Also, Bilstein Shocks are the Bilstein HD Shocks, correct?

H&R SPORT springs is what people are almost always referring to unless they say otherwise, and same for Bilstein: it's their SPORT (yellow) shocks that are popular (Koni and Bilstein use yellow for "sport" category). Not sure what HDs are like or are even a fit for A6 sedan (though I have seen them on website)

These threads are really helpfull yet confusing as well because everyone has their opinions.

I personaly dont care how low my car sits and ride quality is more important to me than performance...

based on that I'v been told Blis/H&R is the way to go...does that seem right?

    Thanks guys!

guys guys guys, if you want ride quality don't get Bil/H&R , get the Koni FSD kit, but if you don't want to spend $1000 on them, i don't know what to tell you.

before i got my setup, i asked everyone this, and they all talked me out of H&R/Bil......it is lower than FSD , but the ride is waaaaaaay worse.

when do you plan on getting them put on?

Im with you. My main thing is where i live the roads are trash and i'm not that sporty of a driver. I'm mainly looking for an upgrade in ride quility from stock and obviously the upgrade in handeling is a major plus.

Do springs realy do that much for you performance wise or is the main benifit just the lowering? I'm thinking I might just skip the springs.

Re: Just some stuff on my mind (Springs/Shocks)

H&R springs are not "better" ride than Eibach -- they are harsher. And a tad lower.

As for FSDs, folks here who have 'em have been clear that they are softer ride than sport springs -- a continuum goes Koni (stiffest) Bilstein (stiff) and FSDs. But there's a lot more travel with FSDs (I watched Frank push down on his trunk and car moved -- a lot). I certainly would not use them with "low" set up -- defeats their design purpose as Gigi has noted several times.

And yeah, everybody prefers what they now have. Probably a coincidence.
