    A4 B5 ADR wont start... Help......!

    Car is 1998 A4 B5 1.8 (R4/5V/ADR)

    Right guys, I'll try to keep this simple as possible, two days ago, on my way home, the fuel light came on, with the normal beep, and i thought that's odd, I'm sure i should have more fuel left......
    so I stop at a garage, throw 25 quid in, drive off, only to hear the familiar "beep" ???

    I look down, and the gauge reads empty, lower in fact then its ever been.

    When i get home, its too dark and cold to mess about looking at it, so i use the trip computer to keep a eye on the mileage/ Fuel so not to run out.

    Today, i figure better stick some more in just to be sure, so i'll give it another 25 quids worth, and proceed home down the motorway, for a nice early finish.

    About 10 miles down the motorway, the car cuts out, no warning lights etc, nothing.

    I'll pull over, and try to restart, car turns over as normal, dash lights all as normal, but it wont start.

    Makes a few calls and gets rescued by a mate, and gets towed home.

    After a nice hot chocolate, I get the laptop out and run VAG-Com and get the following faults:

    17916 - Idle Control Sys: Upper regulation limit reached P1508

    Possible Causes

    * Air Intake System blocked

    Possible Solutions

    * Check Air Intake System

    Stripped all the intake side right back, no blockages or any sign of debris?

    I've read somewhere that the speed sensor can fail, causing similar fault codes?
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    17967 - Throttle Body (J338): Fault in Basic Settings

    Possible Causes

    * Idle Switch Open or Open Circuit
    * Throttle Valve sticks and won't close
    * Speed Impulse from Engine Speed Sensor (G28) recognized

    Possible Solutions

    * Perform Throttle Body Adaptation
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    16500 - coolant temp sensor (g62) Implausible signal

    Possible Causes

    * Wiring and/or connections faulty
    * Engine Coolant Sensor (G62) faulty

    Possible Solutions

    * Check wiring and connections
    * Replace Engine Coolant Sensor (G62) - (I've found a few mentions of this around the web, seems they have a habit of failing quite regular, yet I've never had any overheating or temp problems before?, will it prevent the car from being started? or is this just part of my problems?)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    00771 - Fuel Level Sensor (G) 30-00 - Open or short to B+

    Possible Causes

    * Wiring between Fuel Level Sensor (G) and Instrument Cluster: Open or Short Circuit

    Possible Solutions

    * Check wiring between Fuel Level Sensor (G) and Instrument Cluster

    I've checked all the wiring, but cannot see any signs of damage, or where the cable may have shorted. Faulty sender perhaps?

    Any of you guys know the correct procedure for "Throttle Body Adaptation" for the B5, as I've read a few different ones now?

    Any ideas for anyone who's had these faults before?

    Re: A4 B5 ADR wont start... Help......!

    Ive been having some of the same problems from one of my cars (97 2.8). The fuel gauge problem is usually due to an electrical short somewhere in the system or a problem with the evap system. I've been driving my car for over a year now and the gauge will say there is nothing in the tank when there is over 1/2 a tank, then bounce back to the proper amount a minute late. I just don't care any more about it because I know the car so well and don't feel like spending more money! So I may not have exactly the best opinion out there. But it's what my mechanic eluded to because he was currently sorting the same problem out on an early B5.

    As for not starting did you check your mass air sensor and your idle control valve? Sometimes they can go bad and no fault codes will be set. My A4 would not start at all before I replaced the mass air sensor. There could also be a leak in a hose somewhere possibly vacuum, crank case breather, or such.
