    doh...

that's the glorious thing about quattro...you can always keep your speed up in the turns and dust nearly everyone else on the road.

I am a first time Audi owner. 09 A3 FWD s line APR stg 1. It's just too easy to light up the tires. Oh well, live and learn. Otherwise I love the car, but shoulda got Quattro!

    Re: FWD FTL

    wow...
i bought this car for the fwd option...if i had the choice like i do now in 09' id still do it
...its more like DRIVETRAIN loss ftl. in fact my old plates were "FWDFTW"

having both a b6 and a mk4, i see now how a stage 2 (tho the cars weight vary, i understand) really excels without 4 corners spinning with the same motor...
    now with a 2.0t, its a blast.
ask any front trasher on the b6 boards. theyll stand up to any quattro out there. alot of the BT guys swear by it.

now unless your a big snow goer, or you insist on quarter miles off the line. or want bragging rights with the quattro badge then fine.
i dont and could care less about drag racing...

im so happy with fwd. less weight, less loss...the cars is quick and punchy. ive never had any issues in the water or cornering, nor have i once wished i had quattro.
get yourself some better tires, widen up your wheel set, get a dog bone, and learn how to pull out of first gear properly...
getting onto a freeway or dropping gear from a 6th gear cruise, you should enjoy your lack of rear wheel energy needs with this "entry level" model for audi.

now dont get me wrong...stepping into an rs4, or my next project s5...sure. but for my little turbo hatch, its exactly what the car needs

    Re: FWD FTL

Im mostly complaining about stoplight races / races from a stop. Ill mess around and figure out a good way to get a good launch of people but ive honestly never driven a quattro audi so I don't know what it feels like. The only AWD ive driven I think was my dads 03 turbo.....a lot different from my car hahaha. All around I love the car its just the off the line crap thats annoying

    Re: FWD FTL

im not argueing itll help from launch...im just anti street racing
...if ima do it, itll be 2/3rd gear pulls on the freeway when its open and "safe"

as for daily issues, i think its a mixture of lacking supporting mods and a bad driver

The FailWD has been getting me down pretty bad lately. I'm gonna try some new rubber, to see if that helps. Michelin vs. Falken . Anyone got some input? If that doesn't make any difference, I'm gonna start looking for either a RWD or AWD solution.

452's on 9" fronts that equate to 8.5" ground contact have got me sticking just fine along with a new mount...

lay off the throttle and be in the right gear, theres only so much the car needs to get up and go...

i think its funny when people complain or vent about the lacking features/ability/power of this car and then compare or simply mention apples to oranges.
why are we mentioning ~$50k+ bmw's in an a3 thread?
...a similar topic was started a while back about all the cars quirks, and silly comparisons and "why nots" where posed...
this is a ~$30 5 door, 4 cyl audi people...mod away and have fun with it and your reasonable monthly payment

    Re: FWD FTL

dont forget fwd has the inherent and annoying torque steer factor.

the drivetrain losses of the quattro can be overcome by reducing rotational mass (single mass lwfw, light wheels: OZ ultra's 16lbs ftw, lighter rotors)

when i see audi's i like to rate them on my personal scale of awesome. Ti package, quattro, manual, and turbo always score well, and i dont have any problems at all with a manual or dsg fwd, but imo, when some1 starts modding a cvt, i just shake my head....

*tangent: since audi has now decided to offer turbo quattro a3's, why would they only offer them in automatic? (correct me if im wrong but i believe thats how it works)

    Re: FWD FTL

I myself am not a huge fan of FWD esp the way it behaves in the A3 by that i mean if you get a normal launch it grabs then just loses it up top in 1st and 2nd but then again its not as bad as my old car.

With the S/C and additional work that was one to my 03 Corolla anything more than a 2k rpm launch I'd spin 1st through 3rd on my falken's. It used to be a real pain in the ass to drive in rain and snow but I loved every moment of it.

All you DSG + FWD people need to get HPA's DSG flash. With launch control, you get a much better start than you ever could without.

I'll do my best to put up a video to show you. I'll put together a head-to-head with a modded G35.

    ^ interesting

as for the s/c not sticking, thats exactly why i never understood mk4 dubbers BT'ing these light GTI's.
notice i mention stage 2. thats about all I think youd wanna do with a small hatch, but hey people upgrade with good results
...b6s maybe with the weight different, who knows, but with the right driver and correct wheel it can be pulled off. either that or its just a mod list for more bragging rights

    Re: FWD FTL

Just when I was beginning to think seriously about ditching FWD, Audi goes and does this:

For 40+ mpg, I might be able to suffer through with FWD. But with my luck the Quattro version will be announced 9 months after I buy a FWD TDI like when I bought my A3.

Why do you have a staggered setup w/ 10" rears on a FWD A3?

    What Subaru??

Haha, that's why if I get a A3 I am getting a 3.0S. I dont even live where it snows but I need AWD for when I do go up, and so I can keep up with my friends future S5 on the twistys.

    Buyer confusion...

It's transversely mounted, turbo and has a German badge on it. It can't be a BMW or a Merc, so they get confused.

Staggered can look good on the right car, the A3 is one of them. Over here in the B5 world, IMHO it's not a good combo.
    I'd rock a 2.0T FronTrak A3, I wouldn't pay much for it though.
