Angry Weird Misfire issue - 3.0 Avant

Just like the titles states, I am having a weird misfire issue that I cant seem to figure out. Car started running rough and shortly thereafter the blinking CEL came on, no worries I thought, just CP's that need to be replaced. The next day I find out that the car doesn't want to start - turns out my battery was shot - I buy a new battery and proceed to replace it along with new Spark plugs and new CP's all 6 in total.

Car hesitates in starting up eventually does but it was still misfiring, using vag com I measured blocks 15 & 16 and was seeing misfires on cylinders 1,5. I swapped out CP's from other cylinders and problem still persists, so I try that again but swap the spark plugs aswell with the CP's - Problem still there, cylinder 1, 5...

I decided to add some seafoam to the crankcase so that I could change the oil and while I had it out I also added some to the gas tank and intake manifold. Did that and then replaced the oil, went back to tackling the misfire issue.

I swapped CP and Spark plug from cylinder 2 to cylinder 1 - swapped CP and Spark plug form cylinder 4 to cylinder 5. Started the car up and still misfiring . Disconnected MAF thinking maybe that would help - and it did not do anything at all (besides give me a code for the maf) .

While I keep swapping the CP and Spark plugs, do you guys have any suggestions as to what this could be? I am stumped

Re: Weird Misfire issue - 3.0 Avant

    UPDATE

I have switched them out in every possible combination, still getting misfires on 1 and 5. I am starting to think that it may be the wires that connect to the coil packs, anybody know if these are replaceable or if I can test them in any way?

    Any suggestions?

Ok. it seems you've ruled out the plugs/coil packs in my opinion. Less move on.

Could be injector issues as well. Or vaccum/compression leaks on the cylinders in question.

When you pull the affected plugs, are they coated in fuel?

Next step do a comp test, make sure the engine compression is good accross the board.

    UPDATE

Now the misfire issue has seemed to move to cylinder 6 - I still get the occasional misfire in 2 and 4 but its all about cylinder 6 now. WTF .

Sorry I am not very mechanically inclined per to say but how do you do a compression test?

Yes they are, so i guess that rules out the injectors. What I did notice is that on the cylinder that misfire's the coil pack is relatively colder than the others. I was colder on 5 when that one was not working and it was cold on 6 when that one started to misfire.

Come to think of it, 5 started firing after I had switched CP from cylinder 6 in to it - hmm maybe they need to be warm? I doubt it but I am lost

Re: Weird Misfire issue - 3.0 Avant

    UPDATE - FIXED

Today I decided to try something new, I bought some carb-cleaner and sprayed the hell out of the cylinder head through the spark plug hole. It was pretty dirty in there and by the time I was finished with cylinder 1, 5, and 6 each had a little pool of that stuff inside the cylinder. (I know, I know...)

Cleaned out the spark plugs with electronic component cleaner and put them back into place. Fired the car up and.... still misfiring like crap. I decide to let it run for a while hoping that its just misfiring because of the carb cleaner, after about 7 minutes of rattling and plenty of white exhaust the car starts to settle down and smooth out.

To my surprise the check engine light stops blinking and the car feels "normal". Check with the vag-com and sure enough, no more misfires , hell yeah. Went for a short drive and no more misfires, come back and check with vag-com to make sure that they didnt and sure enough they had not.

Don't know what the carb-cleaner could have done but whatever it did it worked, do you guys think its something I should be worried about?

I know that the prior owner did not take maintenance seriously (even though it was serviced at an Audi Dealership) because when I went to change the air filter I found a dirty ass air filter along with 2 dead mice and about a 1lb of sand/dirt . Anyway after my "tune-up" the avant is running better than ever.
