If I get the Cat CEL does the dealer need to reset the Readiness or Can I?

I'm going to install my HFC and I was wondering if the I can do all the programming with VAG that I need to?

    thanks

IIRC the readiness code gets reset after a few start/stop cycles or a certain amount of miles. I *don't* think you can do it via VAG.

I'm pretty sure it resets when you clear the engine controller via VAG-Com (Ie: clear the MIL code) because that resets everything including long-term fuel trims.

Why would you get a CEL or fail readiness from a HFC? I don't get 'em and I run a HFC. My O2 readiness checks are 'good' (Except today since my primary O2 died. I'll have that fixed early next week.).

In MD I also thought you can have one readiness check fail and the remainder (7?) pass and still pass state inspection.

Re: If I get the Cat CEL does the dealer need to reset the Readiness or Can I?

I thought that as well but when I cleared a CEL on my car, the readiness was just blank, did not say "OK" (or ready, whatever it uses to indicate its good to go). Unless I missed a step somewhere. A few people have tried to clear CELs via VAG and then go to the inspection station right after but the computer caught the readiness was not "OK".

Re: If I get the Cat CEL does the dealer need to reset the Readiness or Can I?

You can easily reset readiness with the VAG-COM (provided the hardware is correct)

Basically you first have to clear all of the codes...once this is done you will go into group 4

Throttle Body Adaptation: 04, block 060

O2 sensors: 04, block 034 (hold foot on brake, then depress gas pedal to floor)

Cat: 04, block 046 (hold foot on brake, then depress gas pedal to floor)

    Evap: 04, block 071

    Leak detection: 04, block 070

Secondary Air Injection: 04, block 077

    Recheck Readiness 15

Feel free to rep me if you would like j/k You guys may want to sticky this in the DIY forum.

Yep, there are the 6 readiness components. Cool, did not know that.

yup...I have about 96K and the cat went out. VA is giving me issues left and right for it and so I went with the 034 HFC but I'm seriously down to the last minute in getting this installed and tested...btw

anybody have instructions for installing it.

Get a TP and anti fouler it. Worked for me. But thank you 400hpa4 for that procedure, that's nice to know i don't have to drive around for days every time i get a code reset. That really should be made into a sticky for future reference.

3 bolts on top and 3 bolts on bottom. unplug your o2 sensors by the coolant resivor and remove. swap the o2 sensors to the HFC and reinstall. the botton bolts are a little tricky. extenstions, swivel, and extra hands help.

I thought i read somewhere in a DIY that you actually had to get under the car and remove the pipe that the cat/tp attaches to on the opposite side of the turbo as well.

Re: If I get the Cat CEL does the dealer need to reset the Readiness or Can I?

okay yeah I was looking at the cat in the wrong direction. I had the exhaust side going towards the turbo so I was like uhhh wtf...I have to do this without a lift but I'm thinking I'm going to unbolt the DP of my neuspeed and pull it out and attach it that way...I hate this...I have to do emissions and the sniffer will pick it up if I ran a TP

they actually do the exhaust test in your area? Mine was just standard OBD II. So the anti fouler worked.

Virginia are a bunch of sticklers. They are a PITA from DMV up to DOT. Deep down south in VA you might be able to get away with it but not up near DC.

I actually thought JBM was registered in MD. I thought MD is cheaper than Fairfax county VA.

That sucks, how do people get away with it then? Swap out the test pipe for a cat before testing? Seems like the only reasonable solution.

    Open up VAG-COM

Go into engine, read the codes and clear them, you must resolve any codes before adaptation, so you may need to fix stuff.

In the engine portion, you will see group 4, newer versions of VCDS will guide you through it.

There will be three measuring blocks, you can only do one block at a time, I am flying to Newark right now so I cannot post up screen shots.

ya, you'll need to get under the car to get at the bottom bolts. i pulled the cat out thru the top of the engine bay.

yeah I don't know how these germans think of engineering this crap...I have to find all my tools first since my mother "cleaned" the garage. She just threw crap around and said tada...anyways I sprayed them down with pblaster and let them sit...

As for the MD/VA thing. I live in VA but I go to school at Annapolis so I need to get my car taken car of in VA. Its stupid because two counties down they don't have emissions. Its just another way the state can bring in money. Let me tell you about stupid safety and front plates...fck that...

So apparently all the shops around here do not install customer parts because of some VA law...wtf...also I have no help b/c no family or friends around and to top it off I have gorilla hands..

    so can I
    1)unbolt the cat
2)drop the back part of the exhaust
3)unbolt the dp (cut the fcking bolts off)
    4) pull the cat/dp up through the top w/ the 02 sensors
    5) put the 02 sensors in the new HFC
    6) drop the HFC down back
    7) bolt the HFC back into place
    8) bolt the DP back to the exhaust back up
    9) bolt exhaust back up
    10) clear codes and drive into the sunset

Re: If I get the Cat CEL does the dealer need to reset the Readiness or Can I?

Ok, so I got the new 034 cat in. Problem now is that I have P0420 low efficency. I really need to get this shit worked out with my car, because I'm a month over due for emissions. I took it to Audi dealership and they said it was my cat, so I replaced that and I'm still having the problem. Do I need to get anti foulers or what?

    This is driving me insane.

I didn't install it RAI did and all the codes were gone, but the readiness was not set. I'm going to throw a fouler in there for good measure tomorrow morning, but I'm getting tired of this shit...

Alright so I got a problem. RAI decided to hercules the O2 sensors on or put thread lock because I cannot get the front one or the back one off. Just wondering do they thread the opposite direction of regular bolts/threads?
