    Thoughts on Touaregs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Been looking at these lately....would be getting the V8, or if I get lucky enough to find one in my price range with decent miles the V10 TDI.

Just wondering if you guys have any experience with these cars and what you liked/didn't like about it. thanks

I don't have any actual experience with them, but I've always thought that Touaregs were good looking suvs.

Are you looking for new or used?

Overall it's a solid car. For the used ones, you can find really good deals, so I would definately consider it.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a new SUV, I don't think it's worth it. For a little difference in price you can get a better premium SUV.

    Re: Thoughts on Touaregs?

i had a 04 v6 fully loaded with the air suspension. I LOVED it. It was one of the most solid feeling suvs i have driven. And on the reliability factor, i didnt have one problem in two years. Offroad the thing was a beast with the locking diffs. i had it in water half way up the doors. I really like the treg 2.

I would be buying a used Touareg, not a T2. And yeah, the prices on them really surprised me

here is what a few hundred owners who were surveyed by Consumer Reports had to say (CR is an independant company - accepts no advertising)

V10 TDI is the sickest... saw one lay down stripes through an intersection for like 150 feet, that thing is pretty damn quick / sweet looking for an SUV

    Re: Thoughts on Touaregs?

Thanks for all the charts Sakimano.

I've been checking out several different Treg forums. Seems the general consensus is to avoid the early '04 models, but be prepared to fix a few other things during the course of ownership no matter what (sounds a lot like the Audis, LOL!).

I'm still interested in the truck, but have 5 months to make a decision. Really comes down to whether I want a car (S4) or an SUV (Treg)

read the screen again...this isn't a 'test'. This is a survey of all magazine subscribers (myself included). They send you a THOROUGH survey in the mail and you answer a few dozen questions about your cars. That data is compiled and presented to subscribers (myself included) in their publications and webpage.

Consumer Reports is about the only source you CAN trust because the testing, research and 'opinion' is all funded by people like you and I...not by publishing companies who accept millions of dollars in advertising royalties form car companies, and who then turn a blind eye to their weaknesses on review.

but you're probably right...it's 'the sickest' so Consumer Reports and the people who ACTUALLY OWN TOUAREGS must be wrong.

Yeah, I think the Trailblazer SS's are cool, too. I wouldn't buy one, though. I've spent too much time in shitty interiors to buy another vehicle with one, haha (and when it comes to Domestics I'm a Ford guy. LOL!)

The only way to get an accurate quality report would be to read through the repair records of every dealership.Consumer Reports is basing their report on those who respond to the survey.People are not going to take the time to respond if they are happy with their vehicle. If Tregs where so bad VW wouldn't still be selling them.Do some research at

no, but when their car fails in their driveway, and they take it to the dealer for warranty work, and the dealer says 'your fuel line was broken...we fixed it' GUESS WHAT...the owner knows what fucked up. The survey asks you to identify 'PROBLEMS' as in things that needed to be fixed. I know EFF ALL about fixing cars, but I can tell you without looking at a repair history EVERYTHING that has ever gone wrong with any of my cars. You don't need to be a dentist to know you have a toothache. You don't need to be a dentist to know which tooth it is either.

I never said the vehicle wasn't great (read my first post)

The OP isn't thinking about renting one for a day...he's thinking about owning one for years. If you think your recommendation based on a smokeshow in an intersection carries more weight than the thoughts of hundreds and hundreds of owners, then you and I will agree to disagree.

Calling me a dick? ok...I'm going to let that go...since you're the same 'kid' who says 'SICK!' and 'SWEET!' every other post should tell the OP about your merit as a source of information. Dude where's your car?

not true...because if it was, the Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Acura and Subaru reports wouldn't be glowingly positive. I always fill out my survey for every vehicle...and to be honest whether I'm happy or dissatisfied, it doesn't matter. I don't pay $40 a year for the membership only to fuck it up by not being honest.

That's what the survey does...but rather than have it come from a biased source (dealers who want their cars to sell) the owners of the vehicles reply about *PROBLEMS* in general categories they've had to have the vehicle repaired for. If there are no problems, the vehicle looks good on the survey. Simple.

seriously? By this rationale, Ford/GM/Chrysler would have abandoned 90% of their product line. Just look at this thread...most of the people on it aren't familiar with what Consumer Reports is really all about...thus don't have the resource to guide their buying...and thus don't know that Tregs are really this bad. Speaking of another definition of 'not selling' there are a few VW sales reps on Audizine who talk about how they can barely give away the Tregs...they're NOT selling! The other post here in this thread about a VW master technician saying the vehicles are a disaster should help you come around as well.

You believing all that Saki.I'm gladd that CR is the high all mighty automotive bible for you.
A high response rate is the key to validity. Employee survey findings can be questioned when fewer than half of the employees respond. So how many people respond to a Consumer Reports survey? "Of over 4 million questionnaires sent this year, the magazine received responses regarding about 480,000 vehicles," according to Detroit News. If most people reported on two cars (because most families have two or more cars), that would put the response rate at a mere 6%. Even assuming one car per family - a highly dubious assumption - we have a taudry 12% response rate.

You can ask the VW dealership-the touaregs had horrible reliability. But the Tuoareg 2s have improved greatly. Don't even go for a v6 because the V8 is much better. I have a friend who has the tdi and he loves it. It gets great gas mileage and hauls ass

we had a fully loaded v8 with air ride and turned in under lemon law. Bad experience. Car before it was a 98 ML320 and we went back to Mercedes, have an 08 ML320 CDI and couldn't be happier. Touareg had potential but didn't work out...

I'm not saying they are the greatest but they aren't as bad as you say. There is a horror story for any model made.I'm saying your source of info is flawed.Out of the 480k that responded where Treg owners. You take that number compared to actual units sold and I think you'll find the number of respondents is very low.Which in return doesn't represent an accurate assessment. It may be to much for you to comprehend. If so I'm sorry

    listen...I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING...TOUAREG OWNERS DID

anyway, keep up the good fight, genius. Argue in the face of the 3-4 owners who have replied here citing lemon law returns and all around problematic experiences vs a couple others who said it was ok. I'm just giving the OP info from an objective source on the matter...I don't give a shit about the car personally but don't make it out that I'm ANTI-Touareg...I honestly love the idea of a diesel SUV.

I'm just rebuking your moronic and ill-informed dismissal of Consumer Reports. The funny thing is, Consumer Reports isn't really providing a review here...Touareg owners are! Consumer Reports is just giving them an opportunity to voice their opinion to other Consumer Reports members. The magazine isn't free...only members are surveyed...so how the fuck would you expect ALL Touareg owners to be surveyed?

As for your problem with the 'sample size' of their data...are you fking mad? They won't publish data unless it meets what they would consider a scientific threshold. If you honestly think that hundreds of replies on a vehicle doesn't constitute a fair assessment WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU PROPOSE?

actually strike that...you're just arguing for the sake of it. You have nothing.

My dad had an '04 that VW proactively replaced with a new '06 when they noticed it had a few too many recurring problems. The '06 has been 100% trouble free.

I helped my gf negotiate $10k off a new '08 on halloween, and that car's even better in 100 small ways.

All of my experience with them has been v6 cars. They're slow, but nice.

All things considered, I'd be looking for a low mile Cayenne if I were in the market for one of these.

I saw the same thing from the fanboys on the Benz forum when I had one: CR, JDPowers, etc etc - if you don't like the message, shoot the messenger. None of them can be the final word, but there's some truth in the objective data.

anyway, keep up the good fight, genius.

He's from Canada. You'll have to excuse him. He's frustrated they aren't smart enough to come up with their own national vehicle brand. They sit up there in their high chair and pass judgment.

Dude, saki, why are you getting so hurt over it? Who cares? Its all personal opinions, you're not going to change any bodys mind.

Anyway, my mother has an '05 V6. Very solid car, rides great, but the V6 is definatly sluggish. I'd love to own a V8 or TDI model.
