    Re: F*ck wipers

Dude - mine were a MAJOR pain. I can only get the driver's side off. At least that one lets me bend the cowling up enough to remove the ECU cover.

I used PB blaster and a rocking/pulling motion to break the hold. They are held in by a weird conical shaped part - imagine the sides of a Reese's cup with all those ridges. You're trying to wiggle the wiper/reese's cup out of the post/reese's wrapper.

I used a LOT of force and still couldn't get the passenger's side. Don't be afraid to get tough, but be careful that you don't break the windshield as you're tugging.

    Re: F*ck wipers

If you took off the wiper bolt you should be all set. It should just pull straight out. I would mark on the windshield the current wiper position with some masking tape so you put it back on in the same location when finished.

i would try some pb blaster. worked for me. just let it soak in a bit, for like 30 min then come back and try to get them off.

edit: whatever you do, don't turn the blade. just try to rock it off.

    Re: F*ck wipers

I had the same problem last week to install my boost gauge... I did'nt succed to remove that F****** wiper but I did remove the ECU box cover without removing the wiper... you just need a lamp to find the idden bolt and your done. It's a little bit harder to replace the cover than removing it but it's possible... (to replace the cover I've used dish soap to make it slip)

    good luck!

there is no way to reach the one under the wiper!!! you have to be crazy smart to find a way to do that.

    anywayz success!!!

i got it out after a lot of wiggling. However, there is no security sleeve like on A4 mods so does that mean the ecu was tampered with before?

Can't wait to get the ecu back and go faster!

    Re: F*ck wipers

seriously not that hard. grab a heat gun and heat it up a bit, pull straight up. wallah. done. you can try a torch but you may catch stray leaves and sticks on fire. be warned. i wouldnt worry about taping the windshield to mark the spot or anything like that. you know about where it goes, plus there will be a line of dirt anyway.

My car was a bitch to remove the wipers, it was 4-5 hours of pulling (and cursing) until they finally let go. Audi actually has a special tool for getting them off.

Just pick up one of these arm removal tools at almost any automotive supply store. Makes the job simple.

    Re: F*ck wipers

I have changed my whole frickin wiper transmission( it broke in half), It ws a pain to take the wipers off took me 2 days, than i finally went to autozone and got me a wiper removal tool. That was a bit tricky too, because the rod the pushes on to the wiper stud is round, there was no grip. So I had to use wise grip and a rag, to hold it in place. by the way that wiper tranny cost me $230 thats a hell of alot for a piece of metal...
    good luck

You can also use this tool, sold at Harbor Freight for <$15, which can be used for other applications in the future and not just the wipers.

If it does not bulge after some hard wiggles, you will need a tool (especially on the later models which become especially hard). In my case, I learned the hard way and a simple wiper arm removal cost me a new windshield.

Have you actually tried using a pulley puller on the wiper? I was having a lot of trouble on a Passat and tried to use one but there was insufficient room between the glass and the bottom of the arm (the wide end of the taper) to fit the teeth. It was also a large metal tool right next to the glass, which was worrysome.

Im going to buy a proper wiper tool like old guy recommended. Honest to god I hate swapping wiper arms, it can be such a freaking hassle if they are stuck

What do you mean no security sleeve ? The silver piece that the is held on with the two black clap type things ?

Why were you taking the ECU out anyways ?

The ECU is held in a metal sleeve that is secured with tamper proof bolts from the factory. Check out the APR ECU install instructions, there is a pic of it.

I wish the bottom of our windshield had heating elements in it to keep the wipers warm in the winter like Subarus. That is the ONE thing I wish my Avant had.

    Re: F*ck wipers

I swapped my wipers to Aero arms last night. This tool that OG posted was AWESOME. Picked it up for ~$12 at Advance Auto Parts.

One hiccup was that it was not quite deep enough to center the screw over the wiper post, so once you loosen the nut you need to keep it on the post but threaded up about 1-2mm to create a "bowl" for the screw to seat into. Also the driver's side arm was a bit more difficult to get this tool onto, but it does go on with some elbow grease.

I cannot express in words how much frustration this saved me last night. Once it was on it took about three seconds per arm to get it broken loose off the taper, then just remove the nut all of the way and the arm pops right off. I had both wipers swapped and ready for snow in under 20 minutes.

    Thanks OG!!!
