Another new law, SB 1567, requires portable GPS devices that are affixed toa vehicle windshield to be placed either in a seven-inch square in thelower right corner of the windshield or in a five-inch square in the lowerleft corner, while the vehicle is being driven. Motorists may still mount aGPS device on top of the dashboard as long as it doesn't block their viewof the road. The device must not be placed so that it interferes with thedeployment of an air bag. The fine for a violation is approximately $108including penalties, depending on the county.
One law that the Auto Club opposed was SB 1407, which raises surcharges ontraffic tickets by $35, "fix-it" tickets by $15, parking tickets by $3, andthe court cost to attend traffic school by $25. The fee increases are beingused to help pay for the construction and rehabilitation of courthouses. The vast majority of tickets are paid by mail or through bail forfeitureand most violators never set foot in a courthouse.
Does this mean that fix it tickets are now $25 instead $10 now?
    Thats sucks if true.

On a side note, I talked to a buddy of mine that works for the CHP out of Redwood City they have been told to "generate" as much revenue as possible ...... so if you think cops were pricks before just wait it's going to be worse.

Exactly. I'm sure I'll go to switch songs on my touch, and then I'll see the red and blues. I try and keep my phone as far away from me as possible now, since I don't use a bluetooth setup and would rather not have to go to court to fight a frivolous ticket.

Re: Questions About New 2009 Motorist Laws....

I knew already that a lot of cities are cracking down on parking and meter violations. I have also seen a greater presence in police activity. Unfortunately, even realizing all this I just got a speeding ticket. I was caught on radar that my Passport 8500 missed b/c it was stolen (didn't lock the car in front of my house). There was a 30mph posted within 2 blocks of a 45mph zone, that I had never seen, and right where I was pulled over I could see a 45mph sign! I was clocked at 47mph. The officer basically asked for my DL and Regs so fast I didn't even get a chance to talk. He came back and said "sign here".....he did not even say "this is not admitting guilt, and if you so choose you can appear in court." I said some things to him later....but all in all probably gonna be 300+ dollars

I love the cell phone law. Dont know about the text thing yet though. Those of you "thumbing thru on an iPhone or iPod" need to get w/ the program and get that iPod link.

GPS units on the windshield have always looked loser like in my opinion and im glad they specified a place for those ugly looking things.

Re: Questions About New 2009 Motorist Laws....

I'm good with the no-talking thing too.........but honestly, it doesn't seem to be doing much, either. I have a 20 minute freeway commute, and can't even begin to count all the dumbshits I see blabbing away on their handsets while blocking traffic, making stupid lane changes, and generally fueling my roadrage fire that doesn't need any more kindling.

I got a Bluetooth, but to be honest.....it requires just as much looking-down-at-the-phone to start a call, I just get 2 hands instead of one to drive with. I'd be interested to see if, after a year, they have figures/research on whether or not accident rates have reduced.

Call me a stick in the mud if you must!

This is the worst law ever. I drive a manual transmission car and talk on my cell phone, and get all kinds of dirty looks for doing it. Actually I had a guy flipping me off and yelling at me on the freeway for doing so... and then he tailgated me. Wtf? Apparently he wasn't upset about it because of driving safety concerns... Then again, the way I've seen most people drive since coming to California I guess you guys need that law :/

On a side note, does anyone here (California, not audizine) use their fucking blinkers?

Almost always, the only time I will sometimes not is dedicated lanes for turning and if absolutely no one is around (way early or late at night).

I know exactly what you're talking about. I lived in Redding for 1.5 years and always used my blinker (I love the three-blink blinker function), but since coming down to LA I've stopped using it at all. On the freeway using your blinker down here just says "Hey I want to change lanes, I'm giving you a chance to speed up so I can't."
