    AWE Resonator removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey all... I just picked up my S5 and had the AWE exhaust and downpipes installed. Great sound!!! I am considering removing the resonators on the system. Would you think an X pipe would be best?

I am assuming the X pipe would replace the resonator in this picture (looks like a small muffler)

Or are they on the downpipes? http://http://www.awe-tuning.com/media/products/awe/S5_exhaust/AWE_S5_Exhaust_dps.jpg

I saw a youtube video and it sounds nice.

    Thanks

the things on the downpipes are your cat's, keep those or you wont pass smog lol. Looks like theres only one resonator on the exhaust in the first picture, it looks like you could just get the resonator cut off and weld a pipe on each exhaust tube, nothing fancy

There's also a set of cats integrated into the exhaust manifolds, which is where the secondary O2 sensors are located. That's probably why you can get away w/eliminating the secondary cats. I think I'll be keeping the secondary cats when I replace my downpipes.

I read on another thread somewhere that according to AWE the downpipes did not have cats at all, they were just resonators.

And as someone has pointed out the cats are integrated with the manifold.

I have also thought of taking that last resonator off, but wasn't sure about it passing emmisions testing, also would it be possible to have it cut off in such a way that it could be put back on at some point?

    Re: AWE Resonator removal

You could cut it out & weld v-band clamps on it & a test pipe. That would allow you to easily swap between the two. V-band clamps aren't cheap but they are what you'd need to do what you want to do.

I'm not sure if they're resonators or cats since I haven't looked at the inside of a downpipe. But, from the outside, they look more like cats than resonators. I read somewhere that secondary cats are common on direct injection gasoline engines. Not sure if VW/Audi do this or not, though. The guy that looked at my car to size up a custom exhaust thought they were cats also.

Thanks for the idea about the v-band clamp, i'll look into it a bit more.
