You don't really need too much hp for auto x, you mainly need the torque.

gtrs would probably be the next thing you can go with. Not sure if the torque spike is there though.

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

My stage 3 setup is pretty darn good at autox. I havent been out of the powerband yet, and I have power till 7.2k

I pretty much stay in 2nd all the time and throw it in first for the very tight U turns.

However my chipped KO3 setup was Damn fast as well. I was regularly faster than corvettes and boxsters on street tires. Now im looking for Street mod/ street tire class win.. Its got the potential, but its a lot different with the stage 3 setup than the maxed out KO3.

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

IMHO a maxed KO4 setup would be enough to give you the thrills and PLENTY of tq, but you'lll be in SM just like any other turbo car with at least a chip (AKA you'll be running against big turbo guys like me..).

For comparison, I have enough tq with my stage 3 setup that I can spin the tires at the exit of any corner. I have a video somewhere...

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

The stage 3 is a lot of fun, but a lot more difficult to drive than the KO3 setup (KO3 setup was just full throttle through alot of the corners, stage 3 setup has a lot more thought and throttle modulation).

I do a lot of drifting with the stage 3 on the autox. Yes I autox a lot, this car was built to be my autox'er.

Im at 1.04 lateral G's in my autox setup in street tires on the skidpad.

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

Go out with what you have and learn from there. Before you get into modifications drive what you have for a season.

Then go with suspension (I have the Koni coil over setup, factory sport front sway bar, largest rear sway bar available and the rear sway bar mount reinforced), then get some ultra sticky street tires (I have bridgestone RE-01R's, however the falcon R-615's or similar are nice as well).

Have fun with that, learn the limits of the car, and then if you dont have any engine mods, determine if you want to be competitive or just have fun (I chose the fun factor...) and figure your engine mods from there.

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

Sorry this post is so long, but I feel strongly on this topic as I was in your shoes a year ago and have learned alot since then.

I don't think it would be smart to go much higher than a gtrs or a stgIII kit. Once you pass that threshold, you start to get too much lag for autox. You also will start getting to the point where your falling in and out of boost which is bad for autox. Autox is meant to get your technical driving skills up. You don't want a ton of power in an autox car and more power will actually hurt you because it can hide driving mistakes that a car with less power would show. Honnestly, I would modify things that effect your handling (i.e. coilovers, etc.) before getting to engine mods.

The last autox I went to this year, I brought my stock 2.8 A4 as usual, and there was a 2000ish jetta there with a GT30R turbo. My times were in the same ballpark as the jetta's because the power I had was consistent even though it was only around 190hp. The jetta kept falling in and out of boost and when the boost would kick in coming out of corners he couldn't handle it.

The best advice I can give you is what my dad's friend who's a driving instructor for Porsche Club gave me. He told me to take my car to a couple events bone stock because that way you won't have alot of power and you will get used to the handling characteristics of your car. As you get better and more comfortable with your car, then, and only then should you start modding it to get more power out of it and to give you more of a challenge. I followed his advice and I am a much better driver now then I ever would have been if I started out with a fast car.

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

I think a stg 3 with all supposrting mods would be perfect for autox. I have been autoxing on a maxed out ko3 for years now. It does good, but seriously if you want to keep up with the modded sti guys you need more power, straight up. I know with more power i could get closer to their times.

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

If I were you, I would drive your car the way it is for a few events before you do anything else. It sounds like your suspension setup is pretty nice right now and PSS9's are my all time favorites. Definitely a good choice. You also should not worry about how other people are running. I never care what other peoples' times are at an auotx event. I always just base how good of a run I had on my own previous times. It's more fun that way because you are the only reason why you had a good or bad run.

    All those mods eh?

Yup autox for at least a year before you start going into bigger power mods or suspension mods.

My stage 3 is maxed out now (Although im not using w/m injection, I do have the 100 octane file) and its definitely plenty fast for autox. Getting the tires warmed up is the biggest issue I am currently facing. (However a 2 lap autox they warm up just fine and stick pretty darn good).

Were in winter season and i've only got 2 autox'es under the new turbo (neither of them do I have video of).

Here I am on 18" rs4 reps and my KO3

That would probably the absolute limit for autox. Anything bigger than that would be better suited for a track. Your car would be awesome around Limerock or NHIS's road course configuration.

Hey andyrew, you might find this thread interesting. The B6 guys have been talking about the mythical "race" or 100 octane apr file. Nice driving BTW

    Re: best autocross motor setup?

I've been autocrossing pretty serious on a maxed K03 setup for a couple years now (and 2 class championships later...). Even with some of our club's tighter courses I've always lost TONS of time against the SM class EVO's and STi's. From Braking to corner exit I'm right with the "better" cars, but anytime there's more than a few seconds of WOT I'm losing all my time against the greater classed cars.

To sum it up....the torque of a K03 running a race fuel tune is great...but you'll still run out of breath. Granted, I haven't driven one personally...I still think that a GT28RS setup would be the best of both worlds (i.e. power vs. drivability).

Fully modified stage 3 kit should be about 250awhp.

Thats about what my gtech's are telling me im at. Thats running 22psi, but im running a 93 octane file on 91 with cali gas (supposedly really crappy..).
See if there are any GTRS cars in your area and get a ride.
