Question What driver to remove MAF screws?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Okay... So I have a P0171 code throwing on my Avant. I've fixed the vacuum leaks. I replaced a defective check valve. Now I need to clean the MAF because I might of have over-oiled my K&N the last time I cleaned it.

So I go to the parts store and buy a set of tamper-proof torx bits and the brake cleaner. I'm all set. WRONG!!! The stupid screw is not a torx (six points) it's a five point tamper proof fastener.

So where do I get the driver I need? No, I'm not going to slot the screw or mangle it in any fashion. I want the right tool for the job. Anyone know what's up here?

Call up Napa. I know Klann manufactures them too.

Looks like the one in the top left corner? Not the 2nd from the upper left (tamper-proof Torx)?

Hey Doug... It looks like the second from the top left but it has five points instead of six.

    Never seen those before.

Get a small torx or allen wrench and hammer it in there to gain torque. Then spin 'em out. Buy new screws.

OR, try some needle-nose pliers. That worked when I had to remove my ballasts from my Xenon headlight housings. I then replaced the screws with stainless steel screws.

Needle nose vise grips might work even better. I know you didn't want to mess them up but honestly I'd just cut a slot in it with a dremel and get it out with a flat head screw driver. Then reinstall new ones that are normal torx style or phillips. Might save you tons of time if you can't find the 5pts around and have to order them... Mine are still in there with the slot cut out. Was just too easy to do it that way. No one is looking I swear ;)

On a side note, I have never seen 5pts on an audi before... maybe yours was taken out at some other time in the past?

Yup like the others have said grab them with a st of pliers and turn them out or cut a slot with a dremel. i've used bother methods but the pliers were the easiest.

Re: What driver to remove MAF screws?

I got a set of hollow-middle tamper-proof set at MicroCenter (yes, that's a computer shop) for $3 dollars (made in China). There is another, Taiwan set but its $7 a set. Torx, Hex, twisted philips (4-edge), two edge, and three-edge - 32 tips in all. And yes, I used it to clean my MAF too - with near 90+ proof iso alcohol.

To defeat the security screw, I break off the post in the middle of the socket. I used SS counter sunk socket head machine screws to replace the originals.
