Age and occupation of R8 owners?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Sorry if this has been done before....

Just kind of wondering about how old you guys are and what you do for a living, if it's not too personal of a question(s).

I'm 18 doing contracting work, and if I didn't go to college next fall I'd clear over 70k before taxes, so within a couple years I could pay for an R8, but not really be able to afford it, if you know what I mean. I'm going to be doing mechanical engineering and may take night classes to work towards an MBA after graduation. Just wanted to see what you guys who are able to afford these cars do.

That's if I don't go to college, though. With the part time hours I'll have while working around classes next year I'll probably clear 30k. I'd rather go to school and make a little less but have stability over the long run than be making 70k for a few years then suddenly be out of a job and not have a degree.

I'm in Doha, near West Bay if you've heard of it. In a compound called Al-Jazi.

I'm finishing up high school over here; stuck in the sand box because of my dad's job.

How long are you here for? If you're looking for something to do on the weekends I'd recommend the local Rugby Club - best bar in the city, IMO. Non-members are only allowed in Thursday and Friday; the rest of the week we have it to ourselves lol.

the middle east is king for contract work. My dad worked in Saudi back in the early 80's and made a decent amount as a civil engineer until the company went under.

at least you have your head on straight and know that money isn't everything. Education and stability will open up so many more doors than a life without the wisdom and maturity you gain from it.

I guess I'm sort of in the same boat as you.. I'm 19 and I'm a Flash developer & project manager for a firm that handles some pretty cool stuff. I personally coded Mike Tyson's new site, Janis Joplins new site, The Doors site, etc... I'm set to make about 80-90k this year and where I could technically afford an R8... there are things way more important in life. I'll stick to my A4 for awhile while saving up money for the future.

    I'm not making 70k....

Right now I'm a full-time student, but during the summers and when I can get back to the states in the winter I do contracting work. If I chose to go full-time with that job instead of going to college next year I'd easily clear the 70k, though. This year I made about 30k working June-August and December, and I'll probably make that or a little more next year by squeezing in work around my classes

I have a picture somewhere that was taken in 2003. It's from my boat, anchored out in the bay, looking towards the West Bay area. All you can see is City Center, the Sheraton, the Ritz, and then open sky. Now all you can see from same spot in the bay is a bunch of skyscrapers.

I have a piece of shit '97 Jeep Cherokee Sport that I drive over here. It's actually pretty solid and I beat the hell out of it in the dunes fairly often, haha. I've had it a couple feet off the ground on dirt roads around here a couple times, lol. The best part is that with the used car market here I'll probably be able to sell it for more than I paid, even after putting 30,000+ km on it

At 70,000 a year, you are not even close to affording an R8, especially the way you're trying to do it. If you need to finance something, you can't afford it anyway. Go to school, it's just a car. :)

Not trying to be a dick, but reading > you.

I said that if I skipped school to be making 70k, after a couple years of saving I could PAY for an R8, but not be able to AFFORD it.

I've already sent in the deposit to hold my place in the engineering department at my school of choice ;)

Wow. Talk about off topic. Haha!

I love R8's but my guess is no one is answering the age question because they're too old. As far as the second question, could be:

#1 Don't have a good job that pays well and blew all their money on buying the car so they can't mod it.
#2 Do have a well paying job but it's really nerdy so they don't wanna say it.

    Just a thought though.

Re: Age and occupation of R8 owners?

I hate this thread, because I hadn't thought of what one little R8 would cost as a normal payment if you financed the whole thing at normal rate of say 5.9%....it's only $2000-$2400/month. No, that amount looks totally silly, and especially paying full term to over $20k in interest!

However, I've got one nice .9 apr loan on the loaded 08 s4 ($50k), and lr3 ($50k) i bought in 07 on decent low rate and business deducted, and an almost paid off 04 rover ($28k) also depreciated over 4 yrs. I had another suv ($75k) recently but sold it.

I guess I don't like all my eggs in one basket, and I have multiple uses of these, but wow, the R8 I saw at the dealer yesterday must have had some sort of mind control fumes coming off it because I actually started thinking about the silly thing. But if there were a low apr incentive on these....

This can be the " if you were to own an R8..." thread.

I mean its pretty clear who can afford this car.... CEOs, VPs and Presidents of large companies, basically anyone who nets well over 100k a year. I would even say over 200k a year. Just to give you an example... A good friend of mine is the VP of a the biggest scrap company in Cleveland Im not exactly sure how much he makes a year but he just moved into a 500,000 dollar house at the age of 26 his dad the president owns a big house too and a million dollar yacht. Neither one of them drive cars like that. I mean sure alot of it is personal preferance on what to spend money on but like I said you have to be makin some mega bucks.

It costs about as much as an R8 just to maintain and store a yacht.

Re: Age and occupation of R8 owners?

maintaining a yacht is ridiculously expensive, lets be honest, if you live in a 500,000 home, then you have no chance of owning an r8, the median price in the housing market before the crisis, was close to that. 1,000,000 doesn't get you what you use to. Cars are horrible investment, unless you buy a car like a reventon, where there are very few of them, and then again, in order to make a profitable gain, you would have to wait an eternity, and be almost the last person to own one to make money.

The r8 should only be bought by people that have enough money, to throw into cars, not money that takes from bills, and more important things. Then again, this is just my own opinion.

But I got to say I am very impressed that you would go to school, instead of taking guaranteed 70k , it takes a lot of maturity for someone to continue school, while being tempted with money at a young age.

First of all, a $500k home has never been the median price in the housing market - even pre-collapse. Cars are horrible investments, but you don't necessarily have to live in a $500k+ house to afford an R8. I live near Cleveland as well in a very nice town, and $500k will buy you a house that is over 6,000 square feet in most neighborhoods (which is a large house by any measure).

i guess markets are all different, palm beach county at its peak, average house with 3500 sq ft were above 400,000. I forget to acknowledge, the different markets, but my point still stands, to me an expensive car should be bought, if you have the means, instead of trying to figure out a plan of how you will be paying for it

WTF? 500K in my area would buy a 1100 sq foot house on a 1/4 acre.
