What do you want in it??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok going to be doing one of my tech threads for engine building/stroking set ups for B5/B6 motors now that I have all the pictures of everything I need (Brenden helped too...THANKS)

What do you guys want in the thread?
Bare in mind that the thread will list parts for sale (gotta pay bills etc) but it will not be advertiser driven but more TECH driven as that is what I enjoy doing....

How bout a simple build thread on refreshing your bottom end. For example I plan on upgrading my rods to I.E.'s but keeping everything else OEM.

Re: What do you want in it??

In my case (and others I suspect) having made it to the first level of BT with an unbuilt engine - I'm interested in the delta to take the car to the next level.
In other words from 230-250AWHP to somewhere in the 350 range. Clearly some sort of tinkering with the block is necessary to get there (as well as fuel/air flow I'm sure). Pictures/parts costs etc would be welcomed.

i would like to see everything.... really.

a mild (stock port AEB with cams and springs) head build would be cool too.

Re: What do you want in it??

I'm interested in the costs of building a 1.8t engine. Making it stronger and more reliable without going to a 2.0l. From there try to maximize the hp with just 1.8l rather then the upgrade everyone is doing on the 2.0l and a bigger turbo.

    EDITED.

Re: What do you want in it??

While a tech DIY would be awesome just for my own knowledge, I just want a parts list for each possible build (and possibly an average retail cost for each part). One for like the "full-out" version, one for stroked plus full out, and one for just bottom end, etc.
    Something like:
Bottom end requires these parts: _______
Adding on _____ will add these parts on to the above____
    And on and on.
I'm just trying to ballpark piecing it together and I'm not really sure what I'm getting in to. $$$ can mean the difference from just doing bottom end, to building up everything, to stroking and going GT2871R or something where I can keep my T2 flange from the APR manifold.
Some of us know enough, but don't have the knowledge a lot of you guys have when it comes to a build. I have lots of guys with transverse experience near who have built up real nice 1.8t's, but a lot of the info they give me based on their transverse experience is different than what I see on this forum from the longitudinal guys. They're ready to do my build and let me watch and learn, but I want to get the right stuff based on what the knowledgeable people here know.

like everyone else, id like to see real prices on a "full out" build (like dougyfresh's for instance) including estimated labor charges for those of us who dont quite have the knowhow to do it all ourselves.

FYI, there are 2 guys on Vortex with the same turbo setup and basically the SAME exact mods except the 1.8L had a ported head and the 2.0L left it stock (37R).

    The 1.8L guy made 680whp
    The 2.0L guy made 707whp

Re: What do you want in it??

^my point exactly, i want to see what the difference is between a 1.8 and a 2.0 in terms of power difference. Can you honestly justify spending another x amount of dollars when i'd be perfectly content with just 350whp daily..or whatever that number maybe.

Issam, I think (sure) you know Rick from NJ who did 2.0 in his B5 A4.
His build is really nice using ABA block and AEB head.
Info about such a build may interest many.

Pros and cons of doing a 2.0L stroker vs sticking with 1.8??

I've always thought that as long as you're building a motor, why not go to 2.0L? But maybe there are some valid technical reasons for not boring out the cylinders?

I thought the same thing. If you're going to build it might as well add displacement. If I ever did do this it would be WAY down the road but it would still be nice to know.

that would be badass, or a full on NA 3.0 build, wild cams, big compression, ported heads, intake manifold designs, etc. And then maybe a progressive two stage for the drag boys...

yea im also interested in keeping the 1.8L but upgrading what ever needs to be upgraded for a bat maybe obviously keeping the boost low until that 2.0L settles in

Re: What do you want in it??

As to whether the build is a stroker or not, I can't see it mattering. If the build features a stroker, than those wishing not to do a 2L can just omit the irrelevant sections. As it is, a lot of people would be doing a hone anyway and so any info on machining would still be worthwhile.

I think a complete bottom end build would be sufficient. I don't think a lot of people are doing their own heads (seating, porting, etc.)
