What do you want in it??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok going to be doing one of my tech threads for engine building/stroking set ups for B5/B6 motors now that I have all the pictures of everything I need (Brenden helped too...THANKS)

What do you guys want in the thread?
Bare in mind that the thread will list parts for sale (gotta pay bills etc) but it will not be advertiser driven but more TECH driven as that is what I enjoy doing....

safe clearances such as piston to cylinder, piston rings to cylinder, main bearings to crank, etc. It'll make it easier since all the info would be in one place.

    great point.

Issam, I know you wrote a DIY about filing rings. I would put that in there. If you showed how to apply the main and rod bearings with torque specs and how to use plastigauge

Re: What do you want in it??

clearances would be good, but depending on the alloy compound of the piston the clearances will differ based on the expansion properties of the alloy.

then you have ring gapping based on the ring type and so forth.

i kno i am being devils advocated, just trying to make sure someone coming into this thread not knowing anything doesn't use all of these specs like the "Bible".

Now knowing what it takes I'd like to have been able to read a thread that includes.......
    piston ring end gapping
    piston to cylinder wall clearances
    main bearing clearances
    rod bearing clearances
    removal of cam's (safely)
    timing of cam's
bore and hone specs (will differ based on ring package choice)

the more info the better. Let me know if you need any pictures of anything as my engine is completely disassembled for the next week or so.

Re: What do you want in it??

More information about increasing displacement with the TDI 95.5mm crankshaft.....I've researched everywhere and I've only been able to minimal information. It'd be great to see a displacement chart like this for the TDI crank:

Quote Originally Posted by 317ssayzarc View Post

    81mm bore x 86.4mm stroke = 1781cc (stock)
    81.5mm bore x 86.4mm stroke = 1803cc
    82mm bore x 86.4mm stroke = 1825cc
    82.5mm bore x 86.4mm stroke = 1848cc
    83mm bore x 86.4mm stroke = 1870cc
    83.5mm bore x 86.4mm stroke = 1893cc

Now when you add a 92.8mm stroke crank to you engine you have the following displacements:
    81mm bore x 92.8 mm stroke = 1913cc
    81.5mm bore x 92.8mm stroke = 1937cc
    82mm bore x 92.8mm stroke = 1961cc
    82.5mm bore x 92.8mm stroke = 1985cc
    83mm bore x 92.8mm stroke = 2009cc
    83.5mm bore x 92.8mm stroke = 2033cc
And also, what type of machining (if any) is necessary for using the newer generation crank shafts

It'd be cool to help the community expand its knowledge of engine building, especially since more and more people are doing it these days

engine builds are good too, and i dont know what hte scope of this write-up will consist of, but i know i struggle with the tuning/fueling aspect of the engine once the engine is complete...

what tune or SEM, injectors, intercooler, TB, turbo, downpipe, intake system.... etc..

Re: What do you want in it??

use of the correct assembly lubes and whatnot while installing various pieces to get the correct torque on aftermarket bolts would be good. plastigauge is something i havnt seen mentioned much before. maybe a comparison of different throttle bodys that can be used.
