    cam tensioner gasket

I'm new to the group, and I have read several posts on this issue, but still not quite sure about what I need to replace these gaskets (and half moon seals?) on an ATQ 2.8 30 valve engine.

I am in the process of replacing the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc. and I noticed some oil has leaked down the front of the driver's side cylinder bank and is affecting one of the coolant hoses in a not so wonderful way.

Looks to me like the valve cover gasket needs to be replaced, and I would like to change the gasket under the cam chain tensioner too, but I don't really have time to order the tool for compressing the tensioner.

Some people say it's a deal breaker, must have tool, and some say you can get by w/o the tool.

Would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done this himself.

    Thanks very much!

You can get it out without the tool, but may god have mercy on your soul if you decide on that route. I've done it without the tool, but you really really shouldn't. I dont believe the compressor is all that expensive. when you buy a new cam adjuster, it comes with one, thats where I got mine.

Try a post in the North East regional forum and I'm sure you'll find a fellow AZ'er locally who could lend you the tool. Worth a shot!

    Re: cam tensioner gasket

    Thanks for the input.

I wound up springing for overnight shipping from Baum Tools in Florida. UPS is getting most of the dough in this transaction! Was rather shocked at 65 dollars and change (each) for the valve cover gaskets from the local Audi dealer.

I'm sure I could have done better on the web.

Tool should be here this afternoon. It's gonna be Christmas all over again!
