3rd gear is messed up

So for the past 6-8 months shifting into 3rd gear would grind ONLY while I'm going WOT. About 3 weeks ago it would grind every time going into 3rd, and that lasted for just a day. It went back to normal the next day. Now for the past 4-5 days it's grinded EVERY time going into 3rd. Is this just the synchro? And what all needs to be replaced? I'm not good with trannys so any help is greatly appreciated.

sounds like a synchro. mine was doing the same thing, though i had multiple issues with mine lol

if you're in first gear - say in a parking lot... and you accelerate, then let off the gas and just engine brake - do you get a whine like when in reverse?

if you do, start shopping for a new tranny NOW instead of waiting. otherwise just get on JHMotorsport and get the rebuild kit. comes with a video so you can DIY

try changing your tranny fluid i had the same problem in my B5 S4 and that solved it. i just changed the fluid and like 4 days later there were no more grinds.

i doubt it. for one you're not pushing over 2.5 times the stock power through yours, and for another i drive mine like a complete shit head at times.

all my burnouts, "drifting", axis spins, drag racing, and faster than necessary shifting didnt help.

true true, i'd still rather change the fluid first you never know you might be lucky like i was and its not that expensive neither...good luck :)

Me too. I treat my car like shit at times. And it returns the favor by breaking down.

yup. that's how it goes though... i didn't build the car to drive it easy, and i have said time and time again that i will NOT go easy on it just because i know something is wrong (short of the motor). in the case of the transmission - i knew it was on its way out, so i made sure she went down fighting... it was going to cost about the same either way

valid point lol. my car only has 60k on it though.... showed signs of death around 52k (right after my... ahem.. new motor/BAT hahahahaha)

That sounds like tranny fluid to me. You might just be low on fluid and have a seal out. Check your levels asap!

It didn't smell like anything. I smelled and smelled, just smelled like the ground haha.

Sounds like your pentosin pink coolant probably leaking from the back of your head since your rear coolant flange is about to take a shit. Better touch it though and see if it is coolant or oil (tranny fluid)

It's coolant. Just don't know where it's coming from. Sick. So now leaking coolant AND a tranny problem!

As David said. Coolant is probably your rear coolant flange on the head. See DIY at the top of this forum.

Trans.... Start by flushing the fluid and putting some nice Redline MT90 in with a quart of Heavy ShockProof. If that does not fix it then your syncros for 3rd gear are on their way out as Daniel mentioned. Same symptom I have with my 1.8T trans but it did not manifest itself until I went GT28RS from bone stock. Issue was even worse when it was cold out and the trans gear oil was cold and viscous.


Okay. back to figuring out logistics for India. Gonna be an awesome trip.

If you wind up rebuilding your transmission (IF this truely is the problem... syncros that is). I recommend all new syncros for all the gears. Might as well do 'em all while you've got it apart. $400 for the syncros. Talk to Jay at JHM as Daniel mentioned.

I hate 3rd gear, mine has been screwed up for a while now. Sometimes it is ok sometimes it grinds real nice and doesnt want to go in while trying to shift fast while winding the piss out of it.
