Test drove an A4 today. I have questions. In the market for a B6 A4.

Alright so I am in the market for a new car. I have always loved the B6 A4, so I took a trip down to a dealer who had one for sale. 02, 79K, Auto., 1.8T. I'm not really in the market for a manual since I already have a race car that I'm building. This is my first Audi/VW I have always owned Japanese cars.

So I get in and start it.

I notice a good amount of vibration? The idle was a bit rough. It was 27 degrees out, so I just thought it was the weather.

So I pull it out and drive. Hm exhaust note is a bit high? Is this normal? Does not sound like a exhaust leak or anything. At this point I'm really in love with the interior and the gauge cluster. It drove fine, I was not able to really get on it to notice any hesitation or anything. Are there any major problems that I should watch out for. I know Audi's require a good amount of maintenance.

Those wondering about price. 11k. Is it a good buy? Exterior and Interior are in great condition..A little bit fading on some of the climate control buttons, just general wear.

Seems high for an 80k mile car. Make sure the Timing belt has been done, and I would get a mechanic to look at it, could save you lots of $$ in the long run. I would say low 10's high 9's for that car.

Re: Test drove an A4 today. I have questions. In the market for a B6 A4.

^^ or bad coilpacks/spark plugs. If the problem went away after the engine got warm then that's most likely the problem. But yeah for 80k miles 11 is too high. I got my 03 in october with the same mileage for 9k. And mine has premium and cold weather packages, painted lowers, aftermarket front bumper, new clutch with only 3k miles, and custom 3" magnaflow exhaust with a test pipe.

Also another note on the rough idle, if when you started the car the idle was rough and there was a blinking CEL that means the car had some engine misfires. That's how you can narrow down the rough idle to something else.

Re: Test drove an A4 today. I have questions. In the market for a B6 A4.

I would have it inspected by a dealer of your choice and get that print out to see what you are getting into. At 80k miles expect to fork out about $1000 (more at a dealer) for timing belt, water pump, thermstate, fluids, and basically a full tune up just for peace of mind. After that...they are great cars. With the pricing dropping so much I feel like I sorta got taken...I purchased an 05' 1.8T fwd USP for $14k with 69k and i thought that was cheap.

    anyway...good luck.

That's a link to the car. So the vibration and exhaust tone are normal?

vibration is probably worn motor/tranny mounts.. about a $250 DIY fix

Despite the doom and gloom, the vibration is likely just the 1.8t. Thesse motors are not sewing machine smooth like Honda / Toyota engines you are probably used to. These don't have counter-rotating balance shafts, and part of it could also come from being a turbo motor (higher cylinder pressures). They are still nice to drive, especially on trips. NO they are not ground pounders like a Camaro or Mustang, but they shouldn't be. You either like the whole package or you don't. Sounds like you appreciate the wholeness of an Audi, so you may just like it.
