people who get that rich are pretty money driven and losing anything is devastating to them. He made money for the sake of making money.

He might have been hit harder than the article states. Due to the madoff's ponzi scheme, billionaires have become millionaires. When you think about it, living like a billionaire and then only have several hundred million left can be pretty devastating to a lifestyle.
