For our cars, it is normal to get charged labor for the oil change at places like shell and jiffy lube (for me atleast). The oil filters are a bitch to change thats why I stopped doing it myself. I usually pay about $75 also.

Whats so hard about changing the oil filter? I think they're alot easier to change than most cars.

$75 is a tad less than average price for an oil change.

Remember, this is Audi dealership using OEM filter (which isn't cheap) and OE-approved synthetic oil.

Remember, the quicky $30 oil change uses cheap conventional oil, oil filter, and some labor. The quicky oil change places will charge you more than $30 anyway, because the oil filter, whether it's in a Fram package, Purolator package...costs just as much as the dealership anyway.

    Re: oil change

My local dealership wants $150 to do it. If you aren't changing your own oil, its definitely a good idea to have dealerships do it, because our cars are slightly easier to screw up than others, so even if it is cheaper, you wouldn't want to have some random lube shop do it, also, they probably wont use approved oil, and will get oil everywhere under your car. $75 is great price for a dealership, I would pay that :D

    Re: oil change

Quick question, has anybody doing their own oil change had a problem getting the oil filter canister off? i did a oil change the other day and it was the first one i've done after the deeler and i couldnt get the canister off without the possibility of breaking it off.

    Re: oil change

I apologize if you know this already, but this canister is meant to be removed with a 36MM socket as compared to most cars that use a strap-style oil filter wrench that goes around the entire canister. I could see it being tough to remove with that sort of tool.
Just make sure and screw off the little cap on the end, then slap the socket on, you should be good to go unless someone put it on way too tight during the last change.

Yeah I think it's easy as well. I like the ability to know for sure what oil they are putting in my car. I do pick up my filter at the dealership though.

lol weren't you the guy randomly flaming the OP of that other thread who was trying to get some advice? And then you got super offended when the OP returned with a "yo moma" joke?

back on topic though, it makes sense that some people would get it changed at the dealership because chances are if you own an Audi, earning $75-$150 is easier and quicker than doing an oil change yourself. I personally do my own because I don't like other people working on my car, and that I've invested in too much shop equipment not to

So you're saying because I can afford an Audi its ok to spend more than necessary for an oil change?
    Sorry I think that's ridiculous.
I've done every mod on my car including: exhaust, coilovers, grille, painting valence, and rear sway.
Just because you can afford an Audi doesnt mean you can throw money away.
The reason why I can afford what I have is because im frugal and I love to do things myself.
I cant imagine paying someone to change 9.5 quarts of synthetic in my s4. I'd be broke.
I mean come on... Its an oil change!!!
People are saying this is a hard thing to do?

    Re: oil change

Or get a car with "audi care" and just drop that sucker off and pick it up for no charge.

I've never changed the oil in this car, but I do in the B5. The oil filter is in an awkward spot that makes it hard to get out of there without spilling oil all over the place. Hopefully when the warranty and audi care runs out, the 2.0t turns out to be a bit easier.

the last guy to do my oil put it on way too tight and me and the guy in the shop spent 15 mins trying to get it off and it broke in the first place so be careful.
My oil was dripping all over the place and it turns out the guy put the ring upside down so it wasn't sitting flush in there. i mean fuck. pretty stupid. But we got it fixed and they gave me new oil and shit... i bought rhino ramps recently so i can do it myself from now on, just need to get jack stands cos i don' trust that shit lol

Well now this is an interesting point of discussion (for me anyway). What makes amsoil better than royal purple? or red-line over elf? Seriously, Im very interested to hear the reason behind these decisions :) I dont think the same oil in the f1 cars is whats marketed to the general public. Like Sunoco's "nascar" gas is NOT the same you get at the pump.

Lets compare and maybe bring some chemistry into this :)

lol, i just use it cos it's what my shop goes by. And they have a couple high powered vehicles and lots of experience so i trust them. And every hard core german car guy i meet around here (vegas) is like amsoil amsoil amsoil! - just go on the tex lol
I don't know a whole lot about oil, just the basics, but i do know that amsoil is highly recommended, so i use it.

Like Sunoco's "nascar" gas is NOT the same you get at the pump.

Lets compare and maybe bring some chemistry into this :)
i cant give you a chemical explanation.. i just figure the company that makes such high grade oil for high performance cars has the right experience to make the oil for my car. i trust their abilities.

    Re: oil change

    here's something else

    http://www.dodgedakotas.com/boards/gen/9245.html

good thread discussing the different oils and why race oil isn't good to use in a DD etc. etc.

    couple quotes:
"Yes, the two products use almost opposite base stock combinations. Redline use mostly Polyoester based stock and Amsoil uses mostly PAO base stocks. Redline uses alot moly and Amsoil uses alot of zink. I use both companys products and like them both. I doubt that you would ever notice a difference in real world conditions. From what I understand Amsoil has the edge in extended drain with most of it's products. Most of Amsoil products are either 25,000 mile or 2-3 times the normaly interval depending on the product. Redline has 15,000 miles or double the normaly change interval depending on product."

"(I know you didn't ask but) I'd say Mobil1 is the best of the "commonly" available synthetics and is probably the best oil at "that" price point. If that is all that fits your budget, use it because I'm not knocking it. However, Mobil1 is somewhat constrained in their formulation approach as they are trying to make a licensed product and sell it in that "lower" price range (formulated to be very good but not the best for price point reasons..I think you guys were seeing it for $18 5-qt jug).

This "lower retail price approach" limits the amount of zinc and phosphorus Mobil can use in the formulation to provide wear protection. This is why they have to play around with moly in their new Supersyn oils to get acceptable wear performance over long drain intervals.

You are making a good choice with Amsoil or Redline. I do think that Amsoil and Redline make better synthetics than Mobil1, especially Amsoil and their extended drain synthetics, but they are up in the $7.00-$8.00/qt range, so this isn't a fair comparison. Amsoil & Redline compared to Mobil1 is not apples to apples. I've had excellent results with the Amsoil Series 2000/3000 products in my personal vehicles, with change intervals of 15k-20k miles. I only use Redline for the race cars.

There are other less readily available alternatives, but when you think of real synthetics for real people, most people would agree that there are only 3 popular brands in North America: (I said popular, not only.)

Mobil1: easy to find, relatively cheap, good detergency.

Amsoil: Lasts long, excellent additive package, and stable against oxidation.

Redline: Good engine performance. (API aproved oils only, race oil is not for Joe Public unless you like tearing down and rebuilding engines) "

    Re: oil change

good breakdown, that four ball test was one of the reasons Royal purple got shouted at, their oil broke down significantly. I'll see if i can drudge up the real statistics when i get home.

Amsoil and Redline both created studies and press releases following that four ball test. Ive got those results somewhere too, but those are bias.

Pretty much what i was going for. Hopefully if some people stumble onto the thread theyll be able to be a lil more educated on what their putting in the engine. I learned the hard way.
