    Dentist Drill?

So I've never heard what a dying turbo sounds like, I mean I've heard of the infamous Dentist Drill, but I've never experienced it.

I noticed today that my turbo noise is a little high pitched and I started to get worried because I could almost interpret the noise as a dentists drill, but I can't tell for sure. How loud would it be? What other symptoms? Is there anything I should check?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Dentist Drill?

you might just have a boost leak that's causing the sound. does it sound like it could possibly be the turbo spooling w/a leak instead of going bad?

    Re: Dentist Drill?

Do you have a boost gauge? what's you vaccum and boost reading? Is the sound only in boost or all the time? Could be a boost leak, DV or turbo going bad. Here's a thread by audipotential and found his diverter valve to be the problem. The second video was funny, I thought someone was yelling at first.

    hope it helps.

    Re: Dentist Drill?

I don't have a boost gage. It's at its loudest when I'm on the throttle, but I here it to continue to whistle down when I let go...

    Re: Dentist Drill?

Is it more of a whistle sound or is it more rough sounding, like a dentist drill?

When I killed my turbo a couple years ago (lost a socket down the inlet pipe, turbo tried to eat it), it made a sick sound and it was pretty loud, not super loud, but I could hear it even at moderate throttle. Of course, going into boost it would get even louder.

If it's a clean sounding whine or whistle, especially if there's some "air" sound with it, audible only/mainly under boost it's more likely a boost leak.

    Re: Dentist Drill?

I'm starting to think its a boost leak. There is one more symptom that I'm just realizing is a symptom. I was backing up a hill to parallel park and when I pushed in the clutch I heard a woosh, like the car dumping all it's boost. I've never heard that before, I actually turned to my girl and said, what the hell was that, I thought it was her rubbing her jeans or something.

How do I find out for sure if it's a boost leak? I don't have a CEL or anything, and when I do verify it, how do I find it?
