    RS4 pressure plate flatness?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Can someone set a straight edge across a new RS4 pressure plate for me. Take a picture of it or measure any cupping if possible. If someone knows the LUK part numbers of the RS4 and S4 pressure plate I'd take that also.

    Thanks,
    Ed

Even checking on a stock pressure plate would help.

maybe email someone from vast or jhm or something like that, they seem to be very helpful and probably wouldn't mind giving you a hand

I'll try some of them, but I didn't want to bother them. Can someone check a used stock pressure plate?

    Re: RS4 pressure plate flatness?

Not sure what you are trying to achieve.

But I can tell you this. The S4 replacement LUK clutch cover and the RS4 LUK clutch cover look cosmetically identical, the finger heights are the same and the plate is the same height.

The ONLY difference is a higher clamp load on the RS4 thus a little more pedal effort and higher torque capacity.

    Hope that info helps.

    Re: RS4 pressure plate flatness?

Well as most would think the pressure plate friction surface should be flat, but in my experiance of working on all makes and models I never seem to find a flat used pressure plate. Even on cars that were not beat or had very few miles on a aftermarket clutch the pressure plate always seems to be cupped or warped. If you set a straight edge across the plates they always have a gap towards the inner edge.

I have a used RS4 plate and was wondering the condition of it is what I was getting at. It is warped a little, but if most of the plates are that way after being used it doesn't make sence to pitch it. I don't have many people around me with S4's so it's hard to find examples local to me.

I usually visually inspect if I ever reuse one (only in our in house cars and close friends, never in a customers car)

Post up a pic so I can see how it looks.

I would be more concerned with resetting the SAC mechanism.

    Re: RS4 pressure plate flatness?

The surface is in decent shape. It didn't have any heat marks on it and I could still see some of the lines in the material they commonly have when they are turned flat at first. I already went over the surface with a 3m abrasive disk and die grinder to scuff up the surface a bit. I also reset the SAC in my press which was easy on my shop press.

Now if I could only find just the friction surfaces I want to reline the disk with I'll have a nice budget setup. I'll post some pictures later.

You should be good to go man. I have put some pretty gnarly ones back in friends cars with great results. A messed up SAC seems to be the only issue that may arrise. If you clean it up chatter shouldn't be a problem.

they are flat, you can always have a pressure plate rebuilt if you want to reuse it and while you are at it you can increase the clamping load by 15%-30% on the pressure plate

    Re: RS4 pressure plate flatness?

I'm totally with you on them being flat when new, but just wish someone would have a known good used one to check. Seems like they always get a little warped from the heat cycles combined with the pressure being applied at the same time. I need to pm you about getting a disk relined if possible. Does anyone know if the LUK pressure plate numbers are for the s4 and rs4 and if there is any difference from the parts Audi sells?

Audi sells LUK parts they just have a Audi PN on them and not the LUK pn. The S4 and RS4 pressure plate are different PNs.

    Re: RS4 pressure plate flatness?

Different clamp load yes, but I'm sure they use the same cast friction surface which is why I didn't care if someone measured a s4 or rs4 plate. Just seems like the mark up on the rs4 parts is not in line with what you can buy the LUK repset s4 parts for. I'd pay a little more for a heavier pressure plate, but not >2 times. I'm sure if you get the LUK parts for the rs4 it would be a lot better deal.

    Re: RS4 pressure plate flatness?

also FYI i don't know how many people know this but the 2000 S4 came with a lighter clamp load on the pressure plate then the 2001. It was a revision that superseded the dealer part number and the 2000 Pressure plate is no longer being made.

You can actually take a 2001 Pressure plate and increase the clamp load to greater then the OEM RS4 PP
