ACHTUN!NG presents... Port Townsend Cruise 2009!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

It's time again for the annual Port Townsend Cruise!! This year marks the 5th of what has turned out to be an annual event and this year's drive will be held on Sunday, March 1st, 2009. I would also like to thank Achtuning for sponsoring this event, taking care of VIP parking in Port Townsend for all participating members of the European car community and negotiating all arrangements for this cruise.

Details from previous years are outlined below for everyone's convenience but please take note of a few changes.

Where to meet: Southcenter Mall parking lot (by Nordstrom on the west-side of the mall) at 9AM. Everyone (european car enthusiasts) in the greater Seattle area meets up at Southcenter Mall to shoot the breeze and get acquainted with each other. Make sure to have your own route info and map printed up prior to the meet. (printable version with .pdf below) Also, be sure to arrive with a full tank of gas. There is a Chevron gas station just across the street from where we will be meeting.

Southcenter Mall Security will more than likely come through to check-up on us as we gather for the drive. Please be courteous to them and let them know what is going on, and that we will be leaving at around 9:35. You can count on them notifying local and state authorities so mind your driving as we enter and exit the mall parking lot and surrounding areas.

    Take off: 9:35am

We will leave Southcenter Mall at 9:35 and head out the west-end of the parking lot (Nordstrom side), and head south, then west towards I-5, then head south on I-5. In past years with the number of cars attending, we can expect to be separated by lights and traffic. If everyone in the front of the line keeps within the posted speed limits, others left behind should be able to catch up... Even if catching up doesn't happen until you get to Tacoma, drive carefully and responsibly.

Also in previous years there has been a pit-stop at the rest area where Hwy 104 and 19 meet just before arriving in Port Townsend. We've over-grown this lot considerably so this year we intend to have people guide cars for parking upon our arrival in Port Townsend - no pit-stops. This will also give us more time to actually spend in town for lunch.

    Route:
---------------------------------------->**Please download a map of route and timeline**<--------------------------------------------

    * I-5 south, HWY 16 West, Hwy 3 North, turn left on HWY 104
    * After Hood Canal bridge take right onto Hwy 19, continue north onto Hwy 20, end at Port Townsend.

    FRS Radio Channel: (optional)
    * 6-8 (main channel - sub channel)
    * If you don't have a Motorola Talkabout radio here is a list of the non-Motorola Privacy codes.

In Port Townsend: Everybody will break for about 3 hrs. (max.) to find a place to eat in town. After that, we'll cruise on to Fort Worden State Park for a group picture similar to the one above. After that, everyone is on their own as far as cruising home or group up however you wish.

Our "VIP Parking" space will be pretty similar this year, in that we will park along Memorial Field on Washington St. However we will this time use both sides of Washington St. and parallel park in a single-line (as opposed to double like last year). There were concerns from lowered-cars that passengers could not get out of the car without hitting the door on the sidewalk. This also ensures that anyone who has to leave early can do so without being blocked in. Any over-flow parking will end up in a parking lot on the far-end of Washington St., next to a skate park. Any further over-flow beyond what spaces are reserved will need to fill up the other spaces along the adjacent streets from the main group. Again, this year's parking fees will be taken care of.

In Fort Worden: Around 3:00pm, we will leave the VIP parking lot area in an orderly fashion and slowly cruise through Port Townsend into Fort Worden for a group picture. Our Special Activity Permit request was approved under the conditions that we adhere to the posted speed limit in the park at all times, which is 15mph on main roads and 10mph in the campgrounds. Based on attendance, a group picture will be taken either at the bottom part of the park (near the water-front) or in the upper lot which can accomodate many more cars. Once the group pictures are taken, everyone is free to do as they wish.

Drive carefully and safely!! I cannot stress enough the importance of how this is to be a safe drive. Previous years' accidents and incidents cannot be repeated! WSP, Port Townsend PD, and Fort Worden Rangers are being made aware of this event. That said...

Mind your driving habits on this cruise! When we drive as a group, each and every one of us represents the community as a whole . No burn-outs in the parking lots, no illegal lane-passing (or shoulder passing), keep a controlled speed and safe following distance at all times, and respect the Port Townsend community, Fort Worden visitors, and other communities that we pass through. Give everyone else the right-of-way. DO NOT keep people from merging onto the Hwy just because you do not want to be separated by the european car in front of you!! I strongly encourage anyone to call 911 and report those driving unsafely. There is a rather large risk in traveling in large groups like this and we need to realize that despite our numbers, we do NOT own the road!!

Tacoma Narrows Bridge Toll: Please don't forget there is a toll on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge now. It is only charged eastbound. Of course those taking the ferry back will not have to pay that fee.

Keep an eye on this first post as it will be updated frequently with details as they become available.

Tempting. Over a 5 hour drive for me.
Is there any Oregon crew going that would want to meet up and cruise together? May make that drive enjoyable.

There are Oregon members of NWQuattro that plan to come up... VWVortex members in Oregon have also expressed interest so I'm sure you can hook up with someone for a cruise.

This was a fun trip last year, ill be coming out again with the NWQ crew. I plan on extending the drive most likely on the return, since that was the most fun part about last year (for those NWQ members who remember that extra added distance lol)

Port Townsend is about an hour away from Port Angeles (where I live) and that's where you can catch the ferry to Victoria. So plan on about an hour and 10 min drive and then about an hour long ferry ride to get to Victoria. hope this helps some...

Glad it is timed while the Hood canal bridge is still open!

I'll latch on to the procession as it passes Port Orchard/Bremerton area...

Drive times from Pt.Angeles should be a lot less that 1:10... its only 45 miles from P.T. isnt it?

Re: ACHTUN!NG presents... Port Townsend Cruise 2009!!

Sources at the WSDOT report that east-bound traffic on Hwy 16 will drastically be affected as a result of a construction project that begins Friday, February 13th...

TACOMA - Getting from the Tacoma Narrows to Interstate 5 is going to
take more time the next few years due to traffic changes required to
build a new State Route 16 Nalley Valley viaduct.

"Traffic flow through Tacoma will bog down during construction, but the
local economy gets a boost as this project creates more than 200
full-time construction-related jobs over the next three years," said
WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator Kevin Dayton.

Thursday morning, Feb. 12, eastbound lanes shift toward the median
between Union Avenue and the viaduct. On Friday, Feb. 13, two Sprague
Avenue ramps close. The new alignment and ramp closures - which allow
crews to demolish bridges and build new ones - will contribute to
    slowdowns and increased traffic congestion.

WSDOT plans to help manage traffic flow on eastbound SR 16 during
construction by activating, for the first time, ramp meters at five
on-ramps - Jackson, Pearl, Orchard, Center and Union.

"We expect traffic flow to suffer as a result of the Sprague Avenue ramp
closures, the tighter roadway and the visual distraction caused by
    construction activities," Dayton said.

"The ramp metering will help the flow of traffic on the mainline,"
Dayton said, "but drivers should plan for delays through the duration of
    the Nalley Valley project."

Thursday morning, Feb. 12, commuters will travel on a new eastbound SR
16 alignment with narrower lanes and shoulders between Union Avenue and
the viaduct. The on- and off-ramps connecting Sprague Avenue and
eastbound SR 16 are scheduled to close early Friday morning, Feb. 13.

The 15,000 vehicles that use the two Sprague ramps each day will need to
disperse to alternate routes and ramps, including Union Avenue - where
    traffic volumes could nearly double.

The eastbound SR 16 ramp to Sprague Avenue stays closed through fall
2011. The Sprague Avenue on-ramp to eastbound SR 16/Interstate 5 remains
closed until completion of the Eastbound Nalley Valley project.

The Sprague Avenue ramps connected to westbound SR 16 close later this
    year.

This $184 million project - funded primarily by the 2003 gas-tax funding
package - eliminates the weave of traffic where vehicles from I-5 change
lanes in order to merge onto SR 16 or exit at Sprague Avenue.

Alas, the event came and went... with perhaps a larger turnout than anticipated. (In just the large Ft Warden parking areas alone my pictures showed no less than 150 cars, and I would have to assume that was only about 2/3rds of the attendees)

We got kicked out of the park for lack of proper planning and coordination, which prematurely ended the event in somewhat dampened spirits even before all the cars had arrived.

Otherwise it was very cool to see so many cars, and I have to admit all the participants seemed well very mannered while cruising the PT community.

Thanks for an otherwise good time.

Re: ACHTUN!NG presents... Port Townsend Cruise 2009!!

First and foremost, I want to thank each and every one of you for attending this cruise and for taking our "drive safe" concerns seriously. Love the post Joe (jlanch) made about what was over-heard on the scanner.

Wow!! What a turn-out... I had a blast! It sounds like many of you did too despite some last-minute changes effecting the initial meeting point and our over-taking of Fort Worden. It is absolutely true that we have in a very short time "over-grown" this event. If this cruise is going to continue to be a drive we all look forward to doing every year, then we'll certainly make the changes necessary to accommodate the growth for future events.

Fort Worden Rangers certainly were not expecting our numbers. However their response would not have been as "strong" in my opinion if they didn't have to respond to a 911-call made from a non-enthusiast visitor whose car was completely blocked in and unable to exit the park. Thank you to those who were quickly able to move your cars out of the way so people could leave.

To be clear, our "special activity permit" arranged with Fort Worden was the arrangement of a group photo to be taken on the "Batter McKinzie Pads" between the hours of 3:30 and 5:00pm. There was nothing in the permit that mentioned a number of attendees, however it's clear the park cannot handle that many cars at one time. They have to consider those who pay to camp there. Their only concern was getting cars off the park grass. When a big number of you decided to leave at once, park rangers took it upon themselves to help direct traffic out. We weren't getting kicked out...

Despite all that confusion, I hear we still have a decent group shot. However I think it's clear now that we're just too big to end the cruise with one.
