    Question Engine Shutdown On Freeway!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Was on the freeway and almost at my destination (about 45 miles away) when i lost power for a second. hit the gas a bit more and power came back for a second before the car completly shut off. Gas guage was close to Empty but light hadnt come on yet. called my boss to come bring me some gas guessing my guage was off. tried starting it again before putting gas in and it started for a second and died. After putting gas in, car would start and idle would stumble around for a sec before dying (reminded me of trying to start a car without MAFS plugged in). Got it towed to my job (Discount Tire) were they said they couldnt hear my fuel pump come on although my boss said he heard it come on when we were on the freeway. SOOOO what i need is some imput from some audi savvy people. Thanks

could be a boost league. Unplug the MAF and see if it fires up.

what kind of voltage are you getting? could be your alternator.

    Re: Engine Shutdown On Freeway!!!

Voltage is fine and im pretty sure my turbos are gone or on there way out. Car has been running pretty damn slow for a while and both turbos have a bit of shaft play so im guessing there isnt any boost anyway but that shouldnt keep it from turning on and running.

Uhh ok...Well you could have had a smaller boost leak that turned into a massive boost leak..

would check if it runs without maf plugged in..maybe your fuel supply line ruptured..although I think thats unlikely, but you could maybe not have enough fuel pressure..perhaps something is causing you to not have enough fuel pressure.

I've had the alternator die on the interstate and run out of gas on the interstate, I believe those are Alternator Symptoms.....

    Re: Engine Shutdown On Freeway!!!

You may want to crack your fuel line at the intake while someone turns the key on teh ignition to the number two position to see if you get fuel. If not, check fuse 29 (I think) for the fuel pump and if it is okay and you get no gas out of the line, it is more than likely your fuel pump.

    Re: Engine Shutdown On Freeway!!!

I don't think it would be the MAF. I was talking to AudiSportB5S4 and when he had MAF problems, power would cut off at 4k rpm's, but I'm pretty sure he drove it back to his house fine, and it started fine.

I guess it might be worth a try to unplug it.

well if no fuel pump, no fuel... so it's either that it's getting no power, no fuel or not functioning... you've filled it with fuel... so check voltage (at the battery, to the panel, to the pump) and then consider a bad pump or relay...?

    Re: Engine Shutdown On Freeway!!!

If it's not a fuel or electrical problem, check all your charge and intercooler piping. If one has come loose or has a leak the car will sometimes start for a couple of seconds but wont run. I hope it's just something stupid like this so you don't have to spend $$$$$. Post what you figure out.

get the codes from the car, thease cars always have intermittent problems n will show up on a scan tool or vag and work your way closer to the problem from their.

    Re: Engine Shutdown On Freeway!!!

Happened to my car just before christmas. Get one of your buddies to help you out, and while trying to start the car have them lightly punch the fuel tank and it should probably start. If thats the case, its definately the fuel pump.

Hope it helps and good luck.
