2.8 gas mileage question, winter weather aside

hey guys my 2.8 30v has been running like shit lately..well not literally running like shit, it runs very strong but gas mileage wise. i commute to school, it is 30 miles each way. i do very little to slim city driving because, everyone usually comes to me, besides errands.

The problem is that im getting about 250 miles to a tank, on a 16.60 gallon tank and driving from full to until the light comes on. i am running in the 65-80 mph area on and off of cruise control.

I have the intake mod done, with k&n filter. I change my oil regularly, and i have an exhaust with the resonator delete. I have run the sea-foam, changed the fuel filter, and ran some fuel line cleaner through the system.

I have a cel for the intake, but thats about it.

What could the problem be? i am running my snow tire setup on my stock rims, i dont feel like they would cause me to get such bad mileage though.

My A6 gets just as shitty mileage. I am putting new plugs and fuel filter soon. Your problem is definitely not the snow tires.

i'm not positive but this is my take on why fuel efficiency goes down in the winter.

    1) gas quality goes down because they add more additives.
    2) engine burns more fuel during warm up. since its cold, it takes longer to warm up
    3) increase in air density

    I too have the 2.8 30V Manual.

I have been tracking my mileage, I was getting roughly 19 city. I replaced the plugs, plug wires, air filter and catalytic converters, and now, I am getting about 25 in the city. I recently made a 400 mile trip to NY and back, getting about 29.5 on the highway doing 80 the entire time.

P.S. I run premium in my car -- 93 octane. Gas is also key, where do you usually get your gas?

I was getting around 320 miles to a tank in my 2.8. Since adding my S/C, i'm now getting around 280.

You should still be getting better mileage than 250 a tank though. Have you tried changing your plugs? It should go without saying, but make sure your tires are properly inflated as that can be an inhibitor too.

Re: 2.8 gas mileage question, winter weather aside

my tires are properly inflated, and my plugs only have about 20,000 on them. I replaced a ton of stuff on the car when i bought it. I am not about to spend a grand replacing the cat's though.

i get my gas at sams club or mobile. since gas went down i have been running premium but i have not seen much of a difference.

im completley puzzled, idk i am upgrading my car in two years when i am done with college but until then i dont want my everyday commuter to be getting shitty mileage.

even with gas at 1.55 here it is still alot of money down the drain.

That almost sounds too good to be true. That's even better than the factory says.

    I average 19 city, 23 highway. Same set-up.

Re: 2.8 gas mileage question, winter weather aside

i ussually get 19mpg about 50%city 50% highway, at 65 im averaging 27-28 on flats, at 55 im averaging 31-32, the faster you drive the more the mileage goes down cuz the more throttle u need to maintain your speed

I just got 24.5 mpg on a 40 mile drive on the highway. I was going about 75 on the first 30 miles and then went down to around 65 and the mpg went up a bit. over 25 mpg going 80 mph seems really high, is it fwd?

just quoted the wrong one, meant to respond to awd mike. I'm guessing the awd refers to your car?

    I averaged 26-27mpg highway, or ~23-24mpg/tank with my 12V.
That was with a SRI, GoodYear Triple Treads, and a warped/busted flywheel.
EDIT: Permanent P0401 EGR code, I didn't know how to fix it then. Had it been fixed I probably could have picked up some more MPG.

I did get like 16mpg once, but I got bored one Saturday afternoon and swapped the stock injectors for a set of 350TPI injectors. It ran slow as hell but the torque curve was soooo smooth.

Re: 2.8 gas mileage question, winter weather aside

I have a v6 30v and I get 27 with all-season tires on and 25 with winter tires and I drive 62 kms a day. The ice-tires definitely reduce mileage, at least on my cars and I waited till December to switch where it was about -24C (-11F) for a few weeks. Good fluids and good gas I suppose?

Re: 2.8 gas mileage question, winter weather aside

Mine gets an over all average of 21.6mpg with mostly city driving or stop and go during rush hour. That's also with snow tires, before I moved to philly I was getting an overall average of ~24mpg with the stock continental tires.

30v 2.8Q A6, darintake + K&N panel, Remus non-res cat-back, VAGCOM A4 engine recode, and 00032 tip code. With the cold weather, Im getting between 17 and 20 going back and forth to school, 10-15 min drive, mixed. In the summer, highway is between 24-28 depending on speeds(29 once), and school or just driving around is about 21. And thats with a lead foot.
