    Exhaust piping...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so on my a4 I have two Magnaflow 14851's... Nothing else.. everything else is stock.. I like the set-up, not to loud, yet at low RPMS it has this v8 purr/sound to it.. The moment I take it past 2,500-3,000RPMS it sounds a little "light"..

I saw at the Audi meet the other day ppl running these bigger stainless steel pipes back from the cats. Would that make a difference in sound vs the stock piping I have??

I dont wanna delete the CATs or the mufflers in the middle before the 14851's b/c I dont wanna fail cali emissions.

    Re: Exhaust piping...

Bigger pipes = more exhaust flow

Does it make the exhaust sound different? Yes it does.

I have 3" piping that splits into dual 3" pipes to match up to my Magnaflow 14835 mufflers.

    Re: Exhaust piping...

^^ when you say it makes a sound difference... what do you mean exactly.. Is is a ricer/honda sound or a deep tone? What I am trying to aim for is deep, smooth, (please dont flame me for this but, v8 sounding) exhaust. If I were to upgrade whatever size piping OEM is, and keep the middle mufflers, would my car sound like what im trying to get at?

.... and no ppl, I am not going to buy an S4 just because their is no way to mimic the true sound of a v8.... :)

    Re: Exhaust piping...

Well for my setup it made the bass note a lot deeper.

The setup is loud enough to regularly set off car alarms when I prowl for a parking spot in an underground lot.

Get a set of tubular headers made if you really want to get some more sound out of the engine.

    Re: Exhaust piping...

you should still pass emissions if you take out the resonator.. that's the one just before u'r actual mufflers around where the pipes split... that wont hurt u'r emissions.. that's what the cat is for

    Re: Exhaust piping...

^^ then what the heck is audi thinking putting that in? lol ... what exactly is its purpose? I mean if the CATs for emissions, and the magnaflow mufflers are to quiet the car, what purpose is the resonator for?

    Re: Exhaust piping...

it's a way for them to get a certain sound out of the exhaust... the resonator gives off a certain sound, then the mufflers just quiet the sound a bit... not sure how they get a certain sound from it, but it's not used for any kind of emissions. that is what the cat is for.. i remember reading about the new mx-5 from mazda.. the engineers went through over 150 different sounds to come out of the exhaust before they found one they liked.. weird.. but no, that resonator can come out and it'll help u'r car exhale a bit better. take it out and run a straight pipe in its place but it will change the tone of u'r exhaust quite a bit

    Re: Exhaust piping...

^^ lol i know you guys must be yourselves... I know im sounding repetative, but please have patience with me... If I run a straight pipe, how will the exhaust note differ?? will it be tin cans banging around, jap ricer I4 sounding?, V8, v12? lol

    Re: Exhaust piping...

my guess would be if you took out the resonator, the tone would get louder... might get a little raspy.. i kno this is a different car, but watch these 2 vids.. they are MB c32 amg's.. first is stock and second is stock w/ resonator removed... i kno this isnt u'r car, but listen to how it changes the tone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxP5q...eature=related

i would say a bit more "throaty" maybe??? if that's a word

    Re: Exhaust piping...

festerfm, thanks so much with putting up with my questions.. I understand now what a resonator delete would do... I am going to have to sleep on this one though for about a week and really think about it.. I like the noise it makes, but it might be too much for me.. I know like 3 guys at my HS that have v6 stangs and they all have their cars souning like this... Ill let you know though! THANKS SO MUCH!

    Re: Exhaust piping...

its a lot louder. not high pitched but deep it rumbles and roars as it coasts i put 3' piping on each side where the resonator was before my 14581's only thing is that it does drone sometimes

    Re: Exhaust piping...

"drone" whats that?? If I were to leave the resonators in place, BUT replace all the piping from the cat back would it makes the sound deeper?

    Re: Exhaust piping...

the drone we're talkin about is when u'r just cruisin and it sounds like u'r in a car w/ no sound insulation at all. the exhaust sound just humms loudly even when u'r not gettin on it..
